Most English grammar books will explain this topic.

Active voice: I am writing this note.

Passive voice: This note is being written by me.

The passive voice is used when the focus is on the action, rather than on the person doing it. Though the use of the passive voice is discouraged, it is often employed for writing technical and scientific papers.

Only verbs that take an object can be used in the passive. So, certain verbs will normally be used only in the active voice form: I am crying.
