I read a criminal story in the moment.  I found this sentence in the book. "Liza was due to finish work about now."  I can translate the words, but the translation of the sentence is bad.

What is the meaning with other words, or a good German translation?

"Michael looked at his watch again; for the hundredth time that evening. Fife minutes to midnight.
Liza was due to finish work about now."

Yes Monique, "due" is difficult to understand.
Kyle – It makes sense. Michael waits and thinks, that Liza finishes her work in this moment.

I have a new difficult sentence:
"One of them wore a blindingly bright plaid shirt, while the face of the other one was etched with a narrow sear."

What is " blindingly bright plaid" and what is the meaning of "etched with a narrow sear"?

Can anybody help?

"blindingly bright" is that something is so bright or so shiny that it forces you to close your eyes. It's like looking at the sun – it makes you temporarily blind. It's term that is used to describe cheap, shiny material worn by people who usually want to show off.

"Plaid" is a kind of woven material with colored strips crossing each other at right angles

THE VICAR OF WAKEFIELD

By OLIVER GOLDSMITH

I CHOSE my wife for such qualities as would wear well. She could read any English book without much spelling; but for pick-ling, preserving, and cookery, none could excel her. We were ever unstinting of our hospitality, and our gooseberry wine had great reputation, so that our cousins, even to the fortieth remove, remembered their affinity without any help from the heralds' office, and came very frequently to see us. ……..

She sent Moses, who was a most discreet bargainer, and whom his sisters fitted out bravely for the fair. They trimmed his locks, brushed his buckles, and cocked his hat with pins. He wore a thunder-and-lightning coat and a gosling-green waistcoat; but, alas! at the fair he was imposed upon by a prowling sharper, who, after Moses had well bargained away the colt, managed to get the purchase money from him in return for a gross of green spectacles in shagreen cases ! and so, as usual, unforeseen disaster frustrated our attempts to be fine.

"Etch" is to make marks or patterns with a cutting instrument or with acid on something (such as glass or cut stone/rock) that is hard and smooth. For example, they usually etch the writing on a gravestone/tombstone.

with a narrow sear

with a narrow scar – "scar" is the marking or indentation that is left on one's skin after it had been cut or bruised.

Here's something about wearing bright colors while swimming out in the sea:

What Color Apparel or Gear Should I Wear in the Water?

Sharks see contrast particularly well, so any high contrast color apparel or gear used by a human in the water is especially visible to sharks. The bright yellow color traditionally used in water safety flotation devices and rafts is readily seen by human rescuers looking for missing persons in the sea and likely is seen easily by sharks as well. As a result, shark researchers laughingly refer to this color as "yum yum yellow!" Should one replace all these devices with more drab colored items? Of course there is a trade-off involved, but most would agree that the benefit of increasing one's chances of being rescued far outweigh the minimal risk of attracting a shark. By contrast (pardon the pun), divers and swimmers probably can reduce the chance of an interaction with a shark by avoiding bright swimwear or dive gear. I personally prefer to use dark blue or black fins, mask, tank, and wetsuit while diving and make a point of wearing my dive watch under the cuff of my wetsuit, thereby eliminating any chance of light reflection off the face of the watch attracting a shark or barracuda. Similarly, one always should avoid wearing jewelry because the glint of light reflecting off metal approximates the glint of light off the scales of fishes, the normal food items of most sharks.

Thank you, tiffintime, for your help. I understand your explanation, but your texts are partly more difficult as my criminal story. Smile
It is not so easy to read the book with patience. I like to know what happen next in the story and don't take the time to translate it word by word. It is a interesting method to learn English by the way.
Best wishes to Sri Lanka

ha ha – Thanks. I agree that reading crime stories is an interesting way to learn English.

I used to be a big Agatha Christie fan. Unfortunately, I seemed to be spending a lot of time reading about politics and history these days. Smile
