We hear about world leaders on the news every day. Before they led nations, they led companies or communities. There are leaders all around us. Maybe you’re a leader, too.

No matter what they are leading, leaders rarely have an easy job. They don’t just make decisions. They also have to convince people that their decisions are the right ones. Recently, the US elected President Joe Biden. This has Mason and Sara thinking about leaders. Listen to them discuss leaders in this leadership English lesson.

Mason:  I’m trying to figure out really what are the traits that I define in a good leader.

Sara:  What have you come up with?

Mason:  The big thing is, do I trust them? Like, what I want to believe in my leader is that they’re not dogmatically just going after their vision, but that their vision is informed by multiple points of view. That everything has been considered, and then they have the point of view that they are trying to rally everyone around.

Sara:  Right! Like, someone who is a good listener, but when the time comes can do what they need to do with everything they’ve listened to and take decisive action.

Mason:  Yeah, definitely. Leaders decide stuff, and leaders are always going to get criticism because not everyone will agree with their decision. But moving forward is generally more important than making everyone happy.

Sara:  Do you think the same qualities make a good leader of, say, a sports team or a theater group as the same qualities that make a good leader for a president?

Mason:  Yeah, like who is someone that you can feel trust in and that is listening and considering all sides, but then ultimately stepping forward and saying “OK, here is what we’re going to do.” There’s also sort of a quality around building consensus, like, it’s really tough to get everybody rallied around, but if you can get as many people as possible, and help them feel included in what we’re all trying to do, that is very important as well.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Since Joe Biden was recently elected President of the US, Mason is thinking about what makes a good leader. He asks Sara to help him identify traits that all leaders have.

Sara and Mason agree that in addition to making decisions, leaders have to listen to many points of view, try to build a consensus, and rally everyone around something. One bad quality a leader can have is being dogmatic.

They agree that the same things that make world leaders great, also make leaders of smaller things like companies and theater groups great as well.

What do you think makes a good leader? Are you a leader? Who is the best leader you know?

Actually <a href=”http://www.slideshare.net/certifiedcoaches/what-makes-you-to-be-a-successful-leader-43781853”> leadership </a> is a strength and that comes with skills . By the use of this skill one may achieve the target he/ she wants with the help of the followers of the leader.  <!-[if gte mso 9]><xml>

I love life – Obama doesn’t face the Israeli conflict because a lot of the rich people in the US are Jewish. If he didn’t hold hands with Israel then he probably wouldn’t have got a lot of the campaign money for the election, and he probably wouldn’t be president. Sad but true. I don’t think any US leader has ever not supported Israel, have they? Okay, that was a bad sentence…I mean, all previous US leaders have supported Israel too, haven’t they?

well, in my point of view, being a good leader has to listen to every team member, after making a decision, they need to make clear and instrustion to let team members easy understand and finish tasks effectively. As Mason said that moving forward is genernally more important than making everyone happy. yes, its kind of true, however,  i think making everybody happy even isnt a priority, but is still essential to take care people’s feeling. Team leader is a person who has the ability to think in different perspectives and have more capability, and decisive and able to rally people around. Even team leader is the person who making the final decison, but still need team members work hard together to achieve an expected outcome.

I guess the leader needs an special specifications , as the same time leader is bron from the childhood not when you grow up with them , some people are leaders from their childhood , they only need a good wiser In order to explain to them how they can Improve their skills , I’m not leader at all , everyone is leader in her or his position , at work , at home , at street , I think everyone knows what he or she needs .

I dislike president Oboma I have never seen any person like him , He afraid to face the Israel occupation , all the time he only sends greetings to them

I think that anyone can be a leader in his field, for example.the one who works a lot just to be helpful to his country and humanty is a leader even if he lived just 30yers.On the contrary the lazy people cannot be leaders even if they live for 120years…you do not need to be a famous person, politician or any other person who has power and influence .those people must be considered as a model to follow.

All leaders should be called Nelson Mandela.

The problem with leaders is they start to believe their own hype. They believe their way is the only way. It’s a bigger problem in countries where there are no elections, like China and Chairman Mao. Though China is good in one way: it has never been a country that likes to conquer other countries. They do all their bad stuff ‘in house’.

A great leader is someone who doesn’t strive for it, like the klingon in Star Trek who said he didn’t want to become leader, but was chosen to be one anyway.

I wonder if there will ever be good politicians in any country, people who can step up and become great leaders. I don’t see many around nowadays. Can anyone give me an example of a good modern leader? [Don’t say the fat dude from North Korea, he’s insane]

I believe some people are born a good leader and others also can learn how to be a good leader, a good leader has to in addition to the traits they mentioned take the opinions of people seriously and not to be conceited cause being a leader may trick you into convincing yourself that you’re the best, for me i haven’t experienced myself yet but i think i’m a good leader and for me the best leader ever is Ghandi.

I thought I know a lot about the leadership because I study Management but when I began to think on this topic I understood that it`s not so easy as it seems to be.

According to the Wikipedia, leadership is a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task. So leaders usually interact with people. That`s why, first of all, a person who wants to be a leader should be a good psychologist. For example, Abraham Lincoln was so succesful because he was a good listener, smiled a lot, inspired companion consciousness of his own importance and he was able to control his emotions. You can find good advice in the book of Dale Carnegie “How to win friends and influence people” and read more about Lincoln and other famous leaders.

Is it enough to be a good psychologist for a leader? I can answer you NO. Of course, it is 60 % of your success but the remaining 40 % is the complex of the following qualities:

  • openness to experience

  • optimism

  • emotional stability

  • assertiveness

  • responsibility

  • perseverance

  • ability to delegate

  • ability to inspire people and encourage their ideas

To sum up, if you want to become a leader you should remember that you must to remain a human in any situation. As Eleanor Roosevelt said: “To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart”. ;)

the thing is ;

Are Leaders Born or Made?first of all we should answer this question.in my opinion leaders are born, because environment affects their attitudes.

sometimes, you’re being in a group.and some of them has a trait of leadership.if you feel yourself that you’re a leader.the members of group will follow who? you or another leader skilled person.either one must be stronger .there are not two leaders among group.someone must be chosen by members.and listen them what to do.
