Hunting has been an activity for as long as there have been people and animals. For thousands of years, humans have hunted animals for food, but today people also hunt for sport. An animal that is killed might not be eaten, but instead its skin or head might be hung on a wall. Today’s hunting is not always about being self-sufficient like it was so many years ago.

People who are opposed to hunting often don’t like guns, killing animals, or both. People who are avid hunters believe that having a gun is their right, and so is killing animals, especially if it’s done as humanely as possible. If it came down to having a meal or being hungry, would everyone shoot an animal? Maybe, or maybe not!

Marni and Brian discuss a difficult topic in today’s English lesson about a popular outdoor activity.

Marni:  I just was spending time with my friend, and he is an avid hunter. What are your thoughts?

Brian:  Oh, hunting? I wish I had that skill, but I am not good around dead animals. I feel like I would be totally unprepared in the apocalypse if it came down to killing an animal.

Marni:  He grew up hunting with his family. They lived off the land, they were totally self-sufficient. So he grew up doing it. I’m just so opposed to it. I mean, killing animals for sport? I guess a lot of people do that. He used it as a food source.

Brian:  I can imagine using it as a food source. But I can’t even think about touching a carcass or trying to skin it. I don’t even know how to fire a gun, let alone how to load ammunition or anything like that.

Marni:  I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I am totally for gun control. A lot of hunters I know actually are.

Brian:  It seems unnecessary in this day and age.

Marni:  I agree.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Marni was just hanging out with a friend who likes to go hunting. She understands why he does it, but she doesn’t agree with the activity. To Marni, killing animals for sport isn’t OK. Even though her friend hunts for food and not for sport, it still makes her uncomfortable.

Brian’s thoughts on hunting are more about what he can and cannot do with a gun, and less about if hunting is an OK activity. Brian knows that if he needed to kill and eat an animal, using a gun would be a problem. He doesn’t know how to shoot a gun, and he also doesn’t know what to do with the animal after it’s dead.

Marni and Brian both have little experience with hunting… Marni because she believes it’s wrong, and Brian because he has never tried it.

Have you ever gone hunting? Is it OK to kill animals for sport, or only for food?

Did everyone understand that there are three people in the story?

Brian, Marni, and the friend who likes to go hunting.

At least that’s how I understood the story.

The friend who likes to go hunting isn’t a trophy hunter, he hunts for food. He can buy food, but that isn’t the point. Farm raised animals don’t taste like wild animals.

Brian is right, he’d starve to death before he learned the essential human skills of hunting. They take time to learn, and if Brian ever did “need to kill and eat an animal”, he might find his lack of skills leave him hungry.

I don’t like trophy hunting, and hunting should never be a specator sport, but hunting is an essential human skill involving a variety of skills.

Hunting to learn skills and for meat isn’t the same as hunting for trophies.

Wild animals don’t die of old age, no matter how cute they are, they die from predators, starvation, automobiles and disease.

Hunting isn’t evil if done eithically. It’s required for ecological stability in areas where there are no other large predators to control populations.

Trophy hunting is just strange to me.

I guess if an African village has a problem elephant and some idiot will pay them a barrel of money so he can shoot it, then good for the village and laughs at the trophy killer.  Problem elephants are killed either way.

I have never gone for hunting, and I support Marni. We don’t need hunting in our days because we have plenty of other activities and full  market with food

I absolutely agree with ola3.

Those trophy hunters are disgusting. Why countries even offer this touristy sport is beyond my comprehension. Taking another life to get a kick out of it is deplorable and sick.

I understand people used to hunt to bring food on the table and feed thief family. But I don’t understand those who hunt for sport and make videos of the poor killed animal and victoriously posing for a shot with a smile on the face. It’s sick.

Well, many species are on the edge of extinction because of illegal hunting. I think this tells which side I am on. Hunting for sport can’t be acceptable anymore.

No. Not only I have not yet but also I do not like to be a hunter.

In my idea it’s just cruel to kill animals for sport. How they could do it?!!!!

When I was child I went hunting with my father in the forest, my father took a gun and went to mountains, found some brids and shot them for meal. Although it is very delicious but I think that is bad action to destroy natural environment.

For my opinion, hunting for sport must be banned. I don’t respect people, who  kill animals for pleasure.

I love hunting, and in the wonderful country of America you are very much allowed to hunt deer (big deer too, depending on what state your in) turkey, wild pigs (we have had alot of them lately in Arkansas and Texas, hunt and kill all the wild pigs you can}  You can hunt bears, cougars, ect. the sky is the limit in southern u.s.  Come on down to Dixie and help us with all these deer, we have to many.

My father is an avid hunter. He hunts fish with harpoon in the sea. These days we’re  in summer and approaching to hotter weathers he proposes me to go hunting with him.But i dont have that skills. But i think i can pull it off somehow. Although killing animals for sport is cruel ,it’s sometimes necessary to have food source like catching fish. After you shut the animal and leave it like its place where it’s shut is not appropriate for humanly because there must be rationale for doing this. If it provides meal for you then i agree on hunting.
