In the book Into the Wild, Christopher McCandless goes, alone, to the wilderness of Alaska. He doesn’t want to be around people, so he becomes a hermit and, sadly, dies a lonely death.

Unless we follow Christopher’s sad example, most of us have other people in our day-to-day life. Having relationships in our life is part of what makes us human. Most of us have developed fulfilling relationships with our friends and family, the people we can call in good times and bad times. In other words, our community.

Of course, it’s good to be self-sufficient and work to take care of oneself and one’s family. But it’s also healthy to enjoy friends and the people in our community. We learn and grow when we care for other people.

What are Gary and Rafael’s thoughts on community? Explore today’s English lesson to learn more.

Gary:  Since I moved to my new home, I have been so lucky to have developed relationships with so many new people. I don’t feel lonely. And what’s great is if anything goes wrong, if there’s an emergency, I actually have someone to call.

Rafael:  OK. Well, I just hope you’re not one of those people that is so friendly that I might just be chilling in my house and then your face is right there outside the window.

Gary:  Oh, well, if I did, I’d show up with pizza.

Rafael:  OK, that’d make it a little better.. but in general, unless it’s an emergency, I don’t want people coming around, nosing their head around my property.

Gary:  OK, so you don’t want a nosy friend.

Rafael:  Yeah, I don’t want nosy neighbors.

Gary:  I’ve found that the people I’ve met, it’s a really fulfilling relationship. So they have something that they like to talk about. I do, too. And at the end of it, we both feel really great and then go about our own day-to-day business.

Rafael:  I guess I’m a self-sufficient guy. I take care of myself.

Gary:  I’m going to take this pizza and go home then.

Rafael:  Hold on a sec…

Gary tells Rafael that he has made great new friends since he moved to his new home. Because Gary has lots of people in his life, he’s not lonely and he knows that he can call somebody if he has a problem.

Rafael, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to want other people in his life. He hopes Gary won’t suddenly appear at his house. Even when Gary jokes about bringing a pizza if he visits Rafael, it sounds like Rafael would rather be alone.

Do you spend more time with your community or alone? Have you ever had a nosy neighbor?

I don’t mind spnding time with my friends and neighbors, but it is fact that I really feel relax when I’m alone. I’m filled with a feeling of freedom.  Because I can do anything! Nobody looks me or talk to me.

If you like being with people and being social, just go and hang out with people. If you enjoy your own company more, then just keep to yourself. Better to follow your preferences. If you feel lonely and hate being alone, you might as well find a way to get to know friends. The Internet or phone apps could help.

I think everybody should be self-sufficient specially men because sometime situation  make us  stay alone and in such that situation if we have learned taking care of others before then we can take care of ourselves too !!

Generally I like to be alone … because these days world is telling lie and we can not know humans … I dont like that others abuse my feelings … so at least now I prefer lonliness because it is full of God being ! :)

Good luck

I think that we should be self sufficient in some way , but it does not mean that we don’t have friends or making friends with our neighbors. For me,  neighbors are very important because they live near us ; and in case of emergency that we have no family members or friends around, they are the ones who will be there for us.

I am kind in the middle of a chatter and an indrawn person. Of both, I prefer to be an outgoing character. In the US the protocol before dropping by at a friend’s house is to call first , it depends each case but it is considered rude to show up unannounced.

not necessarilly the lonely person will become crazy. I’m getting crazy from too much socializng. Need some privacy. And I’m perfectly sane being in my own company. But put in a big crowd, there’s too much pressure on me and I’m easily get tired. :)

yup i like spending time with my frineds, family  and close ones as this is all life about. we have a very short life so we should try to make it memorable somehow like making somebody happy, aiding others, chilling with friends, doing crazy things. otherwise, world would be boring place if we didnt do anything like that.

I am chatty and friendly person. I try to be polite and helpful with all my colleagues and neighbors. I like being chilling with friends. But sometime I need to be alone, to stay in silence with my own thoughts. And I dislike too nosy neighbors. I have my private life and some its parts are closed from everybody.

Ahhh. I did. Actually when I was in my home country I used to spent part of my life with my friends and meet up each other, talk together, u know, friendship. But what’s going here nowadays, in Turkey, is disappointment and loneliness. I really feel being alone and bored. Their English is not good, my Turkish is either, then they don’t understand me and so do I. I am deeply annoying of spending lots of my time is Library. Can you believe it, I’ve never liked it before and I have to sit there, looks at books and enjoy my Laptop and internet. Even I tried and found somebody on Facebook and see each other in the Taksim square (well know place in here) but he said that I ‘m free just on Sundays from 3 pm up to 5. The deal was I’ll help him in English and he will help me in Turkish.

I hate this situation. There are only 2 participators in classes including me along with another girl whom had married last week.

Gee!!!. yeah. It’s Sucks.
