The future is here. Now, with the help of computers, we can walk around in a virtual world. Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that came out on March 28, 2016. Users turn on their computers, put the black headset over their eyes, and they are suddenly looking at a virtual world. Is it convincing? Or is it clunky? You should try it for yourself!

Oculus Rift is revolutionary, but it’s just one type of immersive technology. Another popular trend right now is Pokémon GO. Pokémon GO is a type of augmented reality. Players use their smartphones to see virtual animals. For those who want a workout, the treadmill might be the next big thing in virtual reality. Imagine, going to the gym and running through a jungle or racing zombies. Isn’t the future great?

Andy is excited to start using his Oculus Rift. Brian isn’t so sure that he wants an Oculus Rift of his own. Listen to this English lesson to find out more about this revolutionary new technology.

Brian

Andy_H:  Yo, Brian. You have got to come over to my house after my Oculus Rift comes in. I just ordered it the other day and… You look like you don’t know what that is.

Brian:  That sounds like a space thing.

Andy_H:  It’s the new 3D-video game that just came out.

Brian:  Oh, it’s virtual reality!

Andy_H:  Actually, it’s virtual immersion. So, what you do is you put on these… it, I guess, it’s like a toaster that you put on your eyes. When you’re in there, it shuts out the room that you’re in. All you can see is this video display. When you turn your head to the right, everything on the video display turns to the right. When you have these things on, it’s like you’re in this virtual space.

Brian:  And is it convincing?

Andy_H:  It’s pretty revolutionary. It’s kind of like the first step towards augmented reality. I was just looking at a video of my friend playing it. It looked like he was having an amazing time.

Brian:  That sounds fun. I’d give it a try, but I’m still kind of waiting for something a little bit more immersive. I’ve seen testing of the treadmill. You run where you want to run, and the whole system moves with you. I can actually get a workout that way.

Andy_H:  Well, I mean, this is only the first step. It may be clunky, but trust me. This is the future.

Brian:  All right!

Andy invites Brian to come to his house and use his new Oculus Rift. Brian looks confused. He doesn’t know very much about this new headset. Fortunately, Andy knows all about it! The headset and 3D video games came out recently, and Andy already ordered them. He thinks the headset is a little clunky, like a toaster on his head, but he loves the virtual space he sees when he wears the headset.

Brian isn’t sure this new technology is convincing. He wants something more immersive. For example, he wants a treadmill with revolutionary technology. That way, he can be in a virtual world and also have a workout at the same time. Andy says that Oculus Rift is the beginning of augmented reality. Maybe, Brian can buy his treadmill in a few years. For now, Brian agrees to go to Andy’s house and try using Oculus Rift.

Do you have an Oculus Rift? What do you think about augmented reality?

No I don’t have Oculus Rift. It looks interesting and I am wondering why they name it that way. But I personally prefer the conventional way to exercise, real scenery.

No,I don’t have Oculus Rift.I never play it. I have no idea about augmented reality. But I have seen the 3D-Vedio film in the threat. In such a virtual environment, one would have an immersed sense,so I feel it better. If the Oculus Rift is popularization of my country.I hope to try it.
