We have introduced you to the 2016 winners of Many Languages, One World (MLOW), and they shared their essay ideas with you. Now, you will meet some friends and family members who inspired these winners. These special people helped give motivation to the MLOW winners. They might have helped them to study the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Or they might have studied with them at an ELS Educational Services school.

All of these friends and family members understand the MLOW winners’ passion for languages. They think it is wonderful that these people will participate in the Global Youth Forum at Hofstra University. They feel excitement for the winners because they will share ideas that can change the world. When they are speaking at the United Nations, the MLOW participants will know that their friends and family believe in them.

Watch today’s English video to meet some of these wonderful people.

Federico My brother is joining me for this video. We’re going to talk a little bit about my excitement for going to New York, and the U.N., and attending the Global Youth Forum.

Amani What’s up, man?

Agbolade How are you doing?

Amani I’m doing good. So, why do you think I should participate in the Many Languages, One World Forum?

Rind Here, we have my sister, Carine, and my brother, Jerome, and we’re going to discuss a bit about the things that inspired us to learn English.

Professor Fordyce I am one of the doctoral supervisors of Maria Jose here at Edinburgh University.

Professor Allison We think M.J. has a lot to contribute to this process because we’ve seen her really grow and learn through being part of the multicultural environment here at university.

Agbolade Being in the school where we are, about 30 nations all across Africa, and I see how you communicate with each and every one of us… like myself, I’m from Nigeria, and all of our friends from Kenya and Swaziland… I see that you have a passion to actually explore the languages and learn from different sorts of people. So, personally, I think that is a very good reason.

Mauro As Federico already said, he really likes talking and getting to know new people from all around the world. He loves speaking different languages; he’s really good at that. And we’re really happy that he’s going.

Carine I really wanted to watch the movies without the subtitles. This is one of the biggest inspirations, or motivations, behind me trying to learn English.

Jerome It was actually fun. You know, we could use it to hide our plans from our parents…

Carine …or fight without them knowing.

Rind So, mostly, learning languages was about discovery as children.

Professor Allison We think she asks really good and important questions about what it is to be human, what it is to be a good citizen, not just in a small town, but in the whole world.

Professor Fordyce And I wish her a really good week there. And I’m sure she’ll spread lots of great messages about language and culture during the event.

Amani Thank you, man.

Agbolade You’re welcome.

The winners of the 2016 Many Languages, One World (MLOW) contest had a lot of support. Federico introduces his brother, Mauro. Mauro feels excitement for his brother. He says that Federico will enjoy getting to know the other MLOW participants. Rind introduces her sister, Carine, and her brother, Jerome. Learning language was a wonderful way to make discoveries when they were young. They used their language skills to keep secrets from their parents.

Amani introduces his friend, Agbolade. They both go to the same university. Agbolade has watched Amani get to know many different people from many places in Africa and around the world. Maria Jose’s professors say that they are happy for her to participate in MLOW. Professor Allison thinks she is a wonderful student of culture, and Professor Fordyce thinks she will share great ideas at MLOW.

Who inspires you? Do you have a friend or family member who shares your passion?

A former mentor inspired me over a number of years. She put the fire of teaching adults in my belly. She made me realize that learning is experiential and fun. I was such a sucker for everything she taught me :)

Then there is my father, the fix-it man in my life. He’s a solution person and inspired me in many ways. Thanks Dad!
