The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) began the sci-fi TV show Doctor Who in the 1960s. Amazingly, this show is still very popular today. In fact, there is a huge fandom of people who love The Doctor and his time travelling TARDIS. The Doctor is a space alien. Actually, he is a Time Lord! This means that he can travel through all of time and space.
Time Lords also have the ability to regenerate! This is great for a TV show that is this old because The Doctor changes every few years. It’s a normal part of the story. Many great actors have played The Doctor, including David Tennant and Matt Smith. Next year, there will be another new Doctor. Many fans are speechless because Jodie Whittaker will become the first woman Doctor!
Marni is very excited about this sci-fi news, but what does Andy think? Find out in today’s English lesson.

Marni: Andy, have you heard the big news in sci-fi mania?
Andy_H: Is it about Star Wars?
Marni: No, actually. It’s about the longest running BBC show…. I’m talking Doctor Who.
Andy_H: Snooze!
Marni: Oh, come on! Really?!
Andy_H: Sorry! I mean, I appreciate that people love this fandom for the TARDIS and all that, but… not my thing.
Marni: Well, you know what the TARDIS is, so you obviously know something about the show. But I think this is actually very exciting… that for the first time… I mean the show’s been around since the 60s… first time, The Doctor’s going to be… a woman!
Andy_H: OK, that’s cool.
Marni: It is cool!
Andy_H: I can give them that… all about women, you know, breaking barriers.
Marni: Thank you!
Andy_H: Like, what… the show’s been on since the 60s?
Marni: The 60s! Right!
Andy_H: Why not?
Marni: Exactly. So, the thirteenth Doctor is going to be a woman. Finally, the Doctor is regenerating into a woman.
Andy_H: That is…
Marni: It’s exciting!
Andy_H: It really is. I’m speechless really.
Marni: It’s about time we have a female lead on Doctor Who, right?
Andy_H: Yeah. Now, the Sonic Screwdriver will be in a woman’s hands.
Marni: Yeah! But, you know, there are some super geeks out there who are not very happy about it.
Andy_H: Oh, well. Too bad for them. So, do you want to talk about Star Wars now? Like, another…
Marni: No. No.
Andy_H: OK… wanna talk about sci-fi… why waste my time…

Marni is excited to talk about the new female Doctor, but Andy isn’t part of the Doctor Who fandom. He thinks that this sci-fi TV show is a little boring. Marni tells him the news about Jodie Whittaker becoming the next Doctor. This is interesting to Andy because Jodie Whittaker will be breaking barriers as the first female Doctor.
Andy begins to understand Marni’s excitement. In fact, he’s speechless. He probably won’t watch a lot of the new show, but he thinks it’s cool that a woman will now drive the TARDIS and use the Sonic Screwdriver. Many geeks have different opinions about the new Doctor, but even if they don’t like her, The Doctor will be regenerating into a woman next season.
Do you watch Doctor Who? If you had a TARDIS, where and to when would you travel?
