World Bank slashes Economic Growth Forecast

World Bank officials say economic growth in developing nations will slow drastically next year, as financial turmoil, slower exports, and weaker commodity prices take a toll. Today's (Tuesday's) report says growth in developing nations will fall nearly two percentage points to hit four and a half percent in 2009. It says advanced economies will shrink by about one-tenth of a percent next year.

 Leaders of the major industrialized nations and key emerging market countries are being invited to Washington for a summit November 15th focusing on the global financial crisis. White House officials say the heads of the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank are also invited.

主要工业大国和新兴市场国家的领导人被邀请11月15号在华盛顿参加峰会，重点讨论全球金融危机。白宫官员说，联合国、国际货币基金组织和世界银行的负责人也将参加这次会议。

Earlier, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the global downturn is likely to cause a recession in Britain and elsewhere.

Some key U.S. stock indexes were down more than three percent in Wednesday's trading. Major European stock indexes lost more than four percent, while key indexes in Tokyo and Hong Kong were off more than five percent at the close. The economic crisis has even slowed China's roaring growth, and the government has announced efforts to help the property market by easing certain taxes and reducing some requirements for buying homes.

中国外交部说，温家宝总理本月晚些时候将访问俄罗斯和哈萨克斯坦，就能源合作和其他问题进行会谈。外交部发言人秦刚星期二在北京对记者说，温家宝首先将于10月27号前往莫斯科，与俄罗斯总理普京会谈。

China's Foreign Ministry says Premier Wen Jiabao will visit Russia and Kazakhstan later this month for talks on energy cooperation and other issues. Spokesman Qin Gang told reporters in Beijing Tuesday that Mr. Wen will first travel to Moscow on October 27th for a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

The Arizona lawmaker today accused Obama of saying one thing and doing another to win support.

The issue has helped Obama pull ahead of his rival in the polls. Obama is scheduled to take a break from the campaign trail later this week to visit his gravely ill grandmother in Hawaii.

The Illinois senator is canceling events Thursday and Friday to be with 85-year-old Madelyn Dunham, who helped raise him.
