                            LIMBO

                                               translation  rainbow

My parents divorce was final. The house had been sold and theday had come to move. Thirty years of the familys lifewas now crammed into the garage. The two-by-fours that ran the length of thewalls were the only uniformity among the clutter of boxes, furniture, andmemories. All was frozen in limbo between thelife just passed and the one to come.

译文:我的父母终于是要离婚了。我们原本住过的房屋也已被卖掉,且马上就得搬离出去了,而他们将近三十年的婚姻生活,仿佛就像是被塞进了拥挤的车库里一样随之打包了结了。在扔满杂乱无章的纸盒子、乱作一团的家什与凌乱不堪的破碎记忆里夹杂着狭窄的二四径深屋内的墙壁,它却是这里唯一不曾变动过的东西。而这一切,也将随之被冰封在过往的岁月与未来的日子之间形成的地狱之壑里。

The sunlight pushing its way through the windowsplattered against a barricade of boxes. Like a fluorescent river, it streameddown the sides and flooded the cracks of the cold, cement floor. I stood in thedoorway between the house and garage and wondered if the sunlight would everagain penetrate the memories packed inside those boxes. For an instant, thecardboard boxes appeared as tombstones, monuments to those memories.

译文:阳光倾射,落入窗台,洒落在一堆纸板箱上,如同一条晶莹携光的溪流,倾泻而下、冲击着裂开的冰冷水泥地板。我站立在车库和堂屋之间的大门口,心里想着那昔日时光是否还会重现,来穿透尘封在那些纸盒子里的记忆。就在那一刻,那些纸板箱子仿佛突兀了起来,犹如林立的墓石和那些过往记忆里而耸立起来的纪念碑。

The furnace inthe corner, with its huge tubular fingers reaching out and disappearing intothe wall, was unaware of the futility of trying to warm the empty house. Therhythmical whir of its effort hummed the elegy for the memories boxed in frontof me. I closed the door, sat down on the step, and listened reverently. Thefeeling of loss transformed the bad memories into not-so-bad, the not-so-badmemories into good, and committed the good ones to my mind. Still, I felt asvacant as the house inside.

译文:屋子的墙角落堆放着壁炉,它宽大的烟道犹如手指般向外延伸,那伸长的手指穿过墙体没入墙中,而它并不知晓用于烧暖空房的它,此刻已沦为无用的摆设。在我眼前,壁炉徒劳地发出有节奏的呼呼作响,哼出了那一段段尘封记忆里的挽歌。我合上了门,在石阶上坐了下来,我虔诚地倾听着四周。一阵强烈的失落感袭来,往事不堪回首,一幕幕逝去的美好记忆全部融化成了回忆牢牢地紧锁在心房,孤单落寞瞬间吞噬了我。

A workbench to my right stood disgustingly empty. Notso much as a nail had been left behind. I noticed, for the first time, what adull, lifeless green it was. Lacking the disarray of tools that used to coverit, now it seemed as out of place as a bathtub in the kitchen. In fact, as Iscanned the room, the only things that did seem to belong were the cobwebs inthe corners.

译文:我右手旁的长条桌子现已变得空荡荡的了,它显得呆滞不已,甚至连一枚钉子也没落下。这还是我生平第一次那么详细的打量它,顿感眼前如一片荒芜寥败的草地。而没了往日摆在其上的杂乱工具,那一刻它看上去就如同一浴盆被谎谬地置于厨间。事实上,我环视整个屋子,唯一常驻的是角落里那些集结的蜘蛛网。

A group ofboxes had been set aside from the others and stacked in front of the workbench.Scrawled like graffiti on the walls of dilapidated buildings were the words SalvationArmy. Those words caught my eyes as effectively as aflashing neon sign. They reeked of irony. Salvation -was a bit too late for this family, I mumbledsarcastically to myself.

  译文:一堆纸板盒子被胡乱地甩在了一边,摞在了长条桌的前方。这破旧不堪的危房,墙壁上涂鸦着“救世军”的字样。那些文字格外刺眼,犹如闪烁的霓虹灯牌匾,映入我的眼帘,在此刻,这一切不禁显得有些讥讽。而我又不禁自嘲地嘟囔着,“哼,这所谓的万能救世主啊——对于我们这个病入膏肓的家而言,又能救赎什么呢。”

The houseful of furniture that had once been socarefully chosen to complement and blend with the color schemes of the variousrooms was indiscriminately crammed together against a single wall. Theuncoordinated colors combined in turmoil and lashed out in the gooeyness of theroom.

译文:那些搭配各个房间色彩的家什,都是曾精挑细选买回来的,而现在却沿着一面墙壁与那不协调的色彩纷纷混作一团,充斥在灰暗的房间里。

 I suddenly became aware of the coldness of the garage,but I didt want to go back inside the house, so I mademy way through the boxes to the couch. I cleared a space to lie down and curledup, covering myself with my jacket. I hoped my father would return soon with thetruck so we could empty the garage and leave the cryptic silence of partinglives behind.

我霎时感觉到了藏于车库里的冰凉,但我却又不愿再回到屋子里,于是就很艰难地挪移着,经过了那堆纸板箱旁,走到了沙发前。我腾挪了一席地方,躺了下来,蜷缩着,将外套耷拉着披在身上。我心里想着,父亲会不会马上就架大卡车回来,然后我们一起把车库腾空,将那些离散日子里难以诉说的寂寥一同抛诸脑后。
