The German Roman-Catholic newspaper ‘missio’ says that in Samburu Country/ Kenya together with her fellow sisters, Sister Therese looks after 63 girls between the ages of eight and fourteen. The girls fled forced marriages or the tradition of female genital mutilation. They are safe with the sisters and are allowed to attend school – which some of these young girls have never done before.
But now Sister Therese is wondering how she is going to feed her protégés for the next few months. “Several rainy seasons have failed – the crops in the fields have withered. Luckily we have a well and were able to create a vegetable garden during the Corona crisis. With small donations we bought corn and oil. That saved us. But now we’re at the end.” She furthermore stated that livestock has died from dehydration.

Of course everyone from almost every culture knows that you shouldn’t steal, but now an article written by ‘Reutlinger Nachrichten’ even explained why you shouldn’t steal from these containers where you can throw in old clothes and rags you want to donate. A regular clothes-collecting organisation – at least in Germany – is told to put on a warning sign about what could happen if you try to get stuff out of their containers. People already got stuck in the hatch of these containers and suffocated. If in addition to your old clothes you dropped something else into the container – let’s say your wallet or your keys -, you may just call the organisation this container belongs to and they will send someone to get this out for you. If you are poor and need some new clothing and shoes, just get some proof that you are poor – for example a certificate proving that you are unemployed – and you may get clothes from a cheritable organisation.
By the way there are also those who inofficially put up these containers – they may neither have a warning sign warning you about the dangers of trying to grab from the clothes inside the container nor will they contain an adress or phone number – nor some information what this organisation is collecting for. In Germany this is very unusual to say the least. There may be something fishy about this container – like they didn’t get a permission to put the container up in the first place – and you may call the police.
