Johnny Depp stars in Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards (who looks a lot a pirate already). Rolling Stone Magazine (which isn’t related to Richards’ band) interviewed the two stars together and asked them what they think the biggest similarity between famous rock musicians and pirates is. Depp said that people used to hear that pirates were on their way before the actual pirates arrived. The same is true for rock stars who you see on TV and websites long before they visit your city.
Depp says that news of pirates and rock stars comes around the bend before they actually show up. A “bend” is a turn so this phrase is often used when traveling on roads. When you’re close to something but it isn’t quite in sight because the road curves, you can say that it’s coming up around the bend. But Depp uses the phrase to describe news appearing instead of a landmark on a road.
