A control freak is someone who has to be in charge of everything. More often than not, it’s a bad thing. You say that someone is a control freak if he or she won’t cooperate with you or compromise.
But sometimes people call themselves control freaks just to let people know that they like be in control. You’re boss might say, “Look, I know I’m being a control freak, but I need you to do your job in this particular way.” Or someone renting a room might say, “You’re welcome to move in but I have to warn you that I’m a total control freak when it comes to decorating the house.”
As a famous singer, Alicia Keys can usually get what she wants. But last summer she wanted nothing more than for her best friend, who was very ill, to get better. She realized that no matter how much of a control freak she is, she couldn’t control her friend’s fate.
