Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

It’s on your mind now, isn’t it? Your stomach is growling, your mouth is wet. You’re sitting in front of your computer, licking your chops, thinking about eating. Maybe you just popped a potato chip into your mouth, or maybe you’ve got something heating up in the microwave right now.

Human beings have a unique obsession with food. First, for many people in the world, there is too much of it. It fills our cupboards and refrigerators and drawers and closets. Second, we can’t get enough of it. We binge, exercise, binge, watch tv, snack and sleep.

Watch the following video as RJ the Racoon explains to other animals the obsession humans have about food.

Dialog

1. Study - Read the dialog again to see how the vocab words are used.

RJ the Racooon: They’ve always got food with them. We eat to live, these guys live to eat. Let me show you what I’m talking about.

The human mouth is called a ‘pie hole.’ The human being is called a ‘couch potato.’

That is a device to summon food. That is one of the many voices of food. That is the portal for the passing of the food. That is one of the many food transportation vehicles.

Humans bring the food, take the food, ship the food. They drive the food. They wear the food.

That gets the food hot. That keeps the food cold. That, I’m not sure what that is.

What do you know? Food!

That is the altar where they worship food.

That’s what they eat when they’ve eaten too much food. That gets rid of the guilt so they can eat more food.

Food! Food! Food! Food! Food!

So, you think they have enough? Well, they don’t. For humans, enough is never enough. And what do they do with the stuff they don’t eat?

They put it in gleaming silver cans just for us. Dig in!

Discussion

In the video above, RJ the Racoon says: “We eat to live, these guys live to eat.” The meaning of this expression is that animals only eat as much food as they need to survive, but humans eat, eat, eat even if they are full.

People have developed a number of disorders related to food and eating, such as anorexia and bulimia. Another eating disorder is Pica. People who suffer from Pica crave non-foods (e.g. dirt, rocks, cigarette butts) or food ingredients (e.g. flour, starch, sugar, raw potatos). Pica is more common among small children and pregnant women.
