Lesson

Laid back Joe was working for his mom and she didn’t want to cut off the apron strings. His mom was not playing with a full deck and he got in a pickle with her too often when he was horsing around. When you’re not the sharpest knife in the drawer, you don’t realize you may have a screw loose. She always made a scene, breakin’ wind while looking at him dead in the eye without losing her train of thought. This would turn his stomach. She would never get off herhigh horse or let anything slide. Her rants were below the belt and they never seemed on the same page. He scrapped up enough dough to leave home but mother gave him the ax to keep him posted, and since she wouldn’t put it past him to jump ship; she snatched the car keys to pull the plug on his plans. Joe would have to hold his horses for now with lots of time on his hands. He put all his eggs in one basket and was ready to throw in the towel. He hit the sack that night and wondered how he could hit the road.

There weren’t any women in his neck of the woods, so he crossed the tracks. He robbed the cradle and scooped up a spring chicken that would never cut the cheese, but was the pick of the litter and impressed him in her birthday suit. Even though she was a couch potato and watchedsoaps to kill time, it was better than living life in the fast lane. What started out to be puppy loveturned out to be the real McCoy. On the night they were getting hitched, he got cold feet andstood her up for 2 hours, but got on the same page when he realized his ship had came in and went to the alter on the double. He didn’t want to start off on the wrong foot.

He turned over a new leaf, kept his nose clean, got a condo and after making a couple of rug rats, he got an extra gig cracking jokes to keep his head above water. He played second fiddleto the opening act, but some nights he was right on the money and would steal the show. He found another gig and was licking his chops for the opportunity. He sometimes bit off more than he could chew but didn’t want to drop the ball on his family and could barely make ends meet. It was enough to make him sweat bullets. When he got a higher paying job, he quit cold turkey.

It was raining cats and dogs one day and out of the blue, his mom came out the woodworksand found him. She was scratching her head wondering where these kids came from and why she was kept out the loop. He let the cat out the bag. After realizing he was now the family breadwinner, they buried the hatchet. He wasn’t wet behind the ears anymore and brought home the bacon on his own. He promised from now on to keep her posted. He seemed to be an underdog all his life, but even now, mom said she was on the bandwagon and this was straight out the horses’ mouth!
