Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

The best thing about music is that it’s always new. Every year, hundreds of artists release wonderful new records. There are an endless number of choices in all sorts of musical categories. But how is one to choose between all of the different music out there? Unless you have all the money in the world, you can’t buy every CD released, and even if you could, there just isn’t enough time to listen to all of them.
So, I’m going to do my best to help. I’ve prepared a list of some of my favorite albums. I like a lot of different kinds of music, so I’ve selected artists in many different genres. You’ve probably heard of some of the artists, and there are probably a few that will be new to you.
If you love music, check out these albums – and make sure to tell me what you think!

Dialog

* HIP-HOP
The Digable Planets/Reachin’ (a new refutation of time and space)
This album is an absolute masterpiece. It came out in 1993, and I’ve been listening to it ever since. The innovative lyrics and social commentary are truly unique. The Planets have a lot of positive energy, which is hard to find in the current hip-hop scene. If you like hip-hop music, you’ve got to hear this album.
R&B
D’Angelo/Brown Sugar
D’Angelo has become very famous and popular in the U.S. due to his one-of-a-kind style, silky smooth voice and ghetto good looks. Brown Sugar is his first album and it displays his wide ranging musical talents. Released in 1995, the album is said to have saved R&B – and opened the door for other new R&B performers such as Maxwell, Lauryn Hill and Macy Gray.
ROCK
Pearl Jam/Vs.
I was a Pearl Jam fan as soon as I heard their first album, Ten. I have all of their albums now, but the one that lands in my CD player the most these days is Vs. It’s a great album and it continues to sound current, even though it was released in 1994. Vs. is rock music at it’s best!
FOLK
Tracy Chapman/Tracy Chapman*
The 1980’s were a tough time for some people in the United States. The Republican political leadership left a lot of people poor and unhappy. Tracy Chapman’s stories of real life in America are a bellwether of the times. Tracy’s voice brings the sadness and despair to life, but also displays feelings of hope.

I hope you get a chance to hear these albums. They contain some of the best music ever recorded, and I’ve spent hundreds of hours listening to them.
I’ll be back next week with more great music!
