Is it possible to remain friends with someone you once loved? How would it feel to watch your ex hold someone else’s hand, to kiss someone else’s cheek?
Cool, a song from Gwen Stefani’s solo album, Love, Angel, Music, Baby, tells the story of spending time with her ex-boyfriend, No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal, and his new squeeze. Tony and Gwen dated for quite a while during the early years of No Doubt. Many of the songs on the band’s breakthrough album, Tragic Kingdom, were written by Gwen as a way to deal with her feelings about the break up.

Dave:  Derek, do you think it’s possible to stay friends with someone you’ve dated?

Derek:  I think it’s possible. I know it’s been done. Personally, I haven’t.

Dave:  You haven’t stayed friends with somebody?

Derek:  Ah, no, not really. Um, not sure exactly why. How about you?

Dave:  I’ve tried. It’s very difficult. Um, I had an ex-girlfriend, we broke up…and, you know, seeing her later on with a new guy was kind of difficult to do.

Derek:  Yeah, I would imagine that would be pretty difficult. Ah, maybe that’s why I haven’t, you know. Just because the possibility that I might see her with another guy, I didn’t like. So, that could be why.

Dave:  Yeah. Are you a Gwen Stefani fan?

Derek:  Ah, yeah, actually.

Dave:  Have you heard her new album?

Derek:  I’ve heard parts of it.

Dave:  There’s a song on there called Cool, and it tells the story of her relationship with the bassist in the band and how she now spends time with him and his new girlfriend.

Derek:  Oh yeah, I’ve heard about that and I kind of imagine that would be a little difficult thing to do.

Dave:  She writes about it pretty well in the song. I recommend you listen to it.

Derek:  Well, I just might do that.

Discussion

Relationships are difficult. You spend so much time learning about a person, about their dreams and fears, likes and dislikes and little nuances. But as time goes on the flame begins to fade until finally you realize that it’s time to part ways. Some people try to remain friends after a break up, but often this leads to issues of jealousy. Do you think it’s possible to stay friends with an ex? Many have tried, and many have found it to be too difficult.
