Proposing to someone you love can be very stressful. First, you have to make sure that she (or he) wants to marry you. Then you have to come up with a way to propose that is unique, creative and romantic. You have to find the right style of engagement ring. And then you actually have to do: get down on one knee, show the ring and ask the big question: “Will you marry me?”
Listen to John and I talk about popping the big question.

Dave:  John, you going to tie the knot soon?

John:  Ah, I don’t think anytime soon. I’m not too anxious about getting hitched. How about you?

Dave:  Yeah, I’m kind of running away from that as quickly as I can. But, you know, you gotta think: when it comes time, how are you going to propose to a girl?

John:  I don’t know. You know, people do it in a lot of different ways. I was just at a football game last weekend, and, ah, you know, they put the camera on them and they, and they did it in front of a hundred thousand fans.

Dave:  Oh yeah?

John:  Um, but, I don’t know. I don’t think I’ll make a public display out of it. How about you?

Dave:  Yeah. Well, you know, I wonder about that because it seems the trend is, proposals are becoming such a spectacle. You always have to do something so gimmicky that the romance of it is kind of gone.

John:  But a lot of times it can be more romantic to just to be you and your fiancee.

Dave:  Yeah, yeah. I think it can be if you work it right. Lance Armstrong proposed to Sheryl Crow, you know, in the middle of a lake, in a little row boat. It’s kind of the quaint, intimate image that you’d expect a proposal to be.

John:  Didn’t Tom Cruise propose to Katie Holmes at the base of the Eiffel Tower or in the Eiffel Tower or something like that?

Dave:  Did he? If you do it, Paris the place to do it.

John:  Yeah, for sure.

Discussion

One of my friends and his girlfriend were having a picnic in a park one sunny afternoon. It was a clear, beautiful day. When my friend told his girlfriend to look up, she saw the following words written in smoke in the sky: “Marry me, Carol?” The words were written inside a big, smoky heart. He pulled a ring from his pocket and asked her to marry him. She cried and said yes.
Do you think this was a good way to propose? How would you propose to someone? What are some creative proposals you’ve heard about?
