In a city where racial tensions run high, where the conflicts between whites, blacks and hispanics are becoming more and more hostile, what can be done to stop the hatred and bring people together?

Crash is a movie about racial tensions in Los Angeles. Through car jackings, car accidents and shootings, people of different racial backgrounds come into contact with each other. Some stereotypes are broken down, others are maintained.

Listen to Taylor and Dave talk about the movie.

Dave:  This movie Crash, it won an Oscar, didn’t it?

Taylor:  Yes, Best Picture. It beat out Brokeback Mountain.

Dave:  Oh yeah. I do think that Brokeback Mountain got robbed. It was a great movie.

Taylor:  Well, you know, they both deal with touchy issues right now.

Dave:  Yeah, like, what, racism in L.A. and homosexuality.

Taylor:  Crash, I know it deals with some heavy racial issues, which are still a big deal in all of America as well as in Los Angeles, and Matt Dillon is in it. But I think I’m more excited to see Brokeback Mountain.

Dave:  It was a great movie, I’m telling you. And, you know, both movies do get you to think about some pretty important social issues.

Taylor:  Not many people see those as the same issue, but, you know, it’s, like, the same thing.

Dave:  Prejudice.

Taylor:  Right. When you give rights to every living being, that includes people of different races, that includes people of different sexual orientations.

Dave:  Mm hm.

Discussion

Even though many people see America as a nation that embraces diversity, there is a lot of tension between people who are different from each other. Crash does a good job of revealing this tension.

In 1992, lawmakers made harsher penalties for people who commit “hate crimes,” or crimes against people because of their religious, racial or sexual background.
