Kayla:  Tomorrow is Earth Day.

Dave:  Are you going to do anything?

Kayla:  I don’t know. Earth Day was such a big deal in elementary school. I remember we would come to school and, um, our teacher would have little trees for us and little, like, plastic sacks with dirt in them.

Dave:  Yeah.

Kayla:  And you’d take your tree home and you’d plant it and I was always so excited: “Dad, what kind of tree is this?” And he would always know and I felt so proud my dad would always know what kind of tree it was. And we’d plant it and watch it grow. But I don’t know if I’ll do anything for Earth Day this year.

Dave:  Does Portland have a big Earth Day celebration?

Kayla:  I suppose it kind of does, yeah. A lot of people from the northwest are very environment-oriented.

Dave:  Hippies.

Kayla:  Hippies. Happy people.

Dave:  Yeah.

Kayla:  Embrace the earth.

Dave:  Yeah.

Kayla:  Definitely kids who come to school with their face painted like the world or something like that, you know.

The first official observation of Earth Day was in San Francisco in 1970. Now, Earth Day is recognized in countries all around the world. The day is meant to remind everyone of our shared responsibility to keep the planet clean and healthy.

Here are some ways you can promote sustainable living and help keep Mother Earth happy and healthy:

- Save Energy: Turn off lights and appliances when you are not using them.
- Use Less Water: Turn off the water while shaving and brushing your teeth.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Buy products with less packaging; use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins; buy products made of recycled material.
- Plant trees and flowers.

What are your thoughts on Earth Day and environmental issues? Do you think the Earth is getting warmer? What are the consequences of not taking care of the planet?

Well, I don’t know how it can be explained, but this year, we had a very warm winter and spring. The beginning of March was totally summer than it was getting cooler and now it’s quite as it should be. But on Saturday, early in morning was cold and then within a couple of hours the temperature abrubtly went down. We were a little bit surprised and joked if the temperature would go down so noticeably every couple of hours, then by the end of the day, the ice age will be at the treshhold.

I like the recycling system in Canada too, like in Germany, everything is sorted out. The stores sells you now plastic bags (not biodegradable) for groceries and some even have just paper bags.

The cars are required to go through an emmission test every year.

Municipalities takes care of the streets planting lots of trees.

Bonfires are not permitted in public, but on your backyard, if you’re cooking something on them is permitted.

The businesses must reduce the emmission of air pollutants to meet the ‘cap’ for their industry.

The officials more and more are vouching for nuclear power plants considering them environmentally clean. With what I can’t agree with.

Well, I think it is really important to do something for our Earth! Global warming is dangerous and we have to do everything we can to keep the world “normal” again.
