Mother’s Day is a day to show your appreciation for your mother. In the U.S., people usually send greeting cards and flowers to their mothers.
Though Mother’s Day is now used to celebrate motherhood, its original meaning was to celebrate pacifism and nonviolence.
Listen to Emily and Dave talk about Mother’s Day.

Emily: So, Mother’s Day is coming up.
Dave: Yeah, this Sunday. Are you going to see your mom?
Emily: I don’t have any plans yet, but hopefully those will come together soon.
Dave: Mother’s Day is supposed to be, like, the biggest mail day.
Emily: Yeah, I’ve heard that before.
Dave: Yeah, and I don’t know if that’s from a Seinfeld[/def] thing, because there was a Seinfeld episode…
Emily: Yeah, it made me think of that when you said that. That’s so funny.
Dave: But that’s what you do, right? Because a lot of people…
Emily: ...send cards.
Dave: Yeah, and adults, like, do you want to get together with my mom, so you’ll send flowers and cards instead of actually getting together.
Emily: It’s definitely a big flower day. I come from a long line of florists in my family.
Dave: Do you? Where is your mom now?
Emily: My mom lives here. Even though I still live in the same city as my mom, I’ll probably still send her a card.
Dave: Really? You won’t go see her?
Emily: I don’t know. We’ll see. We’re not big on holidays in my family.

Mother’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world.
Britons celebrate Mothering Sunday, which is different from the American holiday. Though a lot of people give gifts to their mothers, the emphasis is on returning to their “mother church” for service.
In Thailand, Mother’s Day commemorates the birthday of the current queen.
When is Mother’s Day in your country? How is it celebrated?
