Mel Gibson is drinking and driving, and making racist remarks. So far, he hasn’t suffered much because of his behavior. Many folks have even defended Mel’s behavior. But sometimes when stars misbehave, the consequences can be severe.

For, example, Tom Cruise just got fired from Paramount Pictures for being weird. Yeah, he was jumping on Oprah’s couch and lecturing Matt Lauer on the Today Show. Paramount decided that Tom’s behavior could cause the newest Mission Impossible movie to lose millions of dollars. And they may be right. If people don’t like Tom Cruise, will they go see his movie?

Listen to Amanda and Erin talk about the bad boys.

Erin

Amanda:  It concerns and saddens me that in the whole wake of the whole Mel Gibson thing, there have been some people supporting Mel and taking the whole freedom of speech angle, like, everyone makes mistakes. He had a few drinks, so it’s cool. no big deal.

Erin:  He’s also a grown married man with children going out to bars, getting drunk and hanging all over other women, but hey, let’s not judge.

Amanda:  Right, let’s not judge because it’s such a non big deal.

Erin:  Right. All right, yeah, people are free to do what you want, but he’s Mel Gibson. Your day-to-day life matters when you’re an icon like that, when you’re a public figure.

Amanda:  He is a role model. The position that he’s in…

Erin:  Exactly. He is a public figure. And it does make a difference such as Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise’s life, especially in the last year, his day-to-day life has influenced his business and his career choices and he was just let go from Paramount Pictures because they didn’t appreciate his behavior in his personal life.

Amanda:  I am not surprised at all to hear that.

Erin:  Neither am I. And you know what? When you’re a public figure, sorry to say, but you’re probably held to a different standard than other people. Look I’m just being a realist. I’m not saying that people aren’t free to do what they want but if you want to hold influence, you have to take responsibility for the influence that you have over other people.

Discussion

Amanda doesn’t think that freedom of speech should justify Mel Gibson’s remarks.

Erin agrees that he should be more careful. She also points out that he may be partying a little too much instead of spending time with his family.

Erin tells Amanda that Tom Cruise has been fired. She says that famous people have to be more careful about how they act in public. She says that stars have a responsibility to be good role models.

Many of you have defended Mel Gibson. Do you think what he said is OK? What about Tom Cruise? Do you think he should have been fired?

The stars have responsibity to be good actors, like Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson. They don`t have to be a role model.
