Beck's Return

Beck's Return English, baby! Video Lesson

Date: Jan 15 2007

Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

Every once in a while, you buy a CD that you end up not liking or not listening to. It can be a bummer, since CDs are not cheap.

In the US, there are stores that buy CDs from customers. You take old CDs that you don’t listen to anymore (or new ones that you don’t like) to the store. The store sorts through them and decides which ones they think they can re-sell. They offer cash or in-store credit. Usually, you get more money if you choose credit.
Mason bought the new Beck CD, but didn’t like it. Listen as he tells Kevin all about it.

3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.

Dialog

1. Listen and Read - Listen to the audio and read the dialog at the same time.

Kevin:  What are we talking about right now?

Mason:  Beck.

Kevin:  God, I’ve got nothing to say. What’s the new album called?

Mason:  Uh, it’s The Information. I had it for all of, like, five minutes and then I sold it back to the record store.

Kevin:  That bad, huh?

Mason:  Well, I loved his last album, Guero, I mean, it was just, like, my favorite album of the whole year.

Kevin:  So what happened?

Mason:  I don’t know. I mean, I don’t pay attention to lyrics all that often so maybe the lyrics were good, but the music just wasn’t there.

Kevin:  Really?

Mason:  Yeah, Beck’s… Beck’s, you know… He, he likes to alternate between kind of mellow albums, and I can like it for being mellow and then he does, like, really good, fun poppy albums.

Kevin:  He’s definitely quirky.

Mason:  He definitely is quirky. And this was just kind of bluhhhh.

Kevin:  Dull.

Mason:  The whole thing. The whole thing. But, man, and I hated to sell it back ‘cause it came with all these cool stickers. The packaging was awesome. Uh…

Kevin:  Well…

Mason:  But you know…

Kevin:  There’s got to be some content.

Mason:  It was, like, 16 bucks down the drain. I was, like, If I… It’s still new. Maybe I can get, like, 10 bucks for it and buy a new album.

Kevin:  How much did you get?

Mason:  I think I got, like, 10 bucks in trade.

Kevin:  That’s alright.

Discussion

Mason didn’t really like the new Beck CD. He just didn’t like the music. He decided to sell it back to the record store.

Selling back a CD is not the same as returning it for a refund. When you sell back a CD, you don’t get the full price back because you have opened it and used it.

Mason chose store credit instead of cash. That’s why he says “in trade.” Getting credit is like trading.

Have you heard The Information?

What do you do with the CDs you don’t listen to anymore?
