I'm Sorry English, baby! Video Lesson

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

It’s hard to say you’re sorry. Apologizing means admitting you were wrong. It means admitting you are fallible. Most people are not very good at apologizing in their own language, let alone a foreign language.

In English, when you want to tell someone you are sorry, you say either “I’m sorry” or “I apologize.” If you hurt someone’s feelings, you can say “I apologize for hurting your feelings.” If you forget to call a friend, you can say, “I’m so sorry I didn’t call you!”

It is much easier to forgive someone when they offer a sincere apology.

Listen to Mason and Amanda talk about the delicate subject of apologies.

Mason:  So, OK, here’s a funny thing that happened the other day. Uh, just, you know, a little, a little thing. But I went… I got home and all the milk that I’d just bought the other day was gone out of the fridge.

Amanda:  OK. So little thing.

Mason:  Little thing. Serious little thing. And, so, like, I go to my roommate’s room and I’m, like, “Hey, there’s no milk.” And she says, “Yeah, I really wanted to apologize about that.”

Amanda:  That’s the end of story.

Mason:  And that’s it.

Amanda:  So no “I’m sorry.”

Mason:  She didn’t say “I’m sorry.”

Amanda:  So that’s not an apology.

Mason:  She just said that she wanted to apologize.

Amanda:  I hate that.

Mason:  Or, you know, and then people say, “I should apologize” or “I wanted…” you know, but yeah.

Amanda:  So basically they’re talking about the act of apologizing…

Mason:  It’s like a concept.

Amanda:  And never following through.

Mason:  It’s like, “I like the idea of apologies but I don’t really do that.”

Amanda:  OK.

Mason:  That’s kind of what she’s saying.

Amanda:  Well, apologies are very difficult.

Mason:  Yeah.

Amanda:  I don’t care who you are, they’re very difficult to do.

Mason:  Mm hm. But what about… do you think that’s it? That it’s, like, they’re just… It’s a, it’s a half, a half way?

Amanda:  It’s avoiding something that’s uncomfortable, certainly.

Mason:  Hm.

討論

Mason was more annoyed by the fact that his roommate wouldn’t really say she was sorry than by the fact that she drank all the milk.

Mason and Amanda agree that people often talk about apologizing or talk around an apology rather than just saying they are sorry.

Amanda points out that apologizing is difficult for everyone. It can be uncomfortable to admit that you are wrong.

Do you avoid apologizing?

Or are you good at saying you are sorry?

Be the first to say sorry and hurry up! What if it’s the last time you see a person the one  you’ve offended or not offended. What if the person will never be back in your life. How much regrets will folow after.

When I’m wrong I have to apologize, or the sense of guilt would kill me! It’s often not easy to do, especially if you deeply hurt the other person. Sometimes, when I can’t say I’m sorry, I just try to make up by doing something else, like giving them presents WITH an apology or anything that would make them forget what I did.

When I was a baby I undrestood that my parents hardly ever said ‘I am sorry’...I had tought that it is normal behavour!

after years past I undrestood that it was so hard because you have to accept resualt of that in the future !

bytheway I decided to use “I am sorry” when ever I did wrong things.. we would better to accept our fault before someone else tries to persuade use about our wrong doings! woundnt we?

apologizing  is kind of wisdom not a weakness , and whatever you did, its easier to forgiven if you admitting you were wrong , really i cant understand why people can not say ( iam sorry ) if they were wrong .

i say for every one feel uncomfortable  with saying i am sorry ( you are  seems more confident about your self when you know your  sin  and feel guilty )

Unlike Amanda’s concept about being uncomfortable to admit anything wrong you did, I think that apologizing release you from the feeling of guilt especially if your fault was something you have said or have done unintentionally…

I really feel sorry and I apologize once I feel guilty or realize that I’ve done something wrong to somebody… Apologizing comforts me…. I don’t like to hurt people..

I think, that’s easier to apologize to friends, you know ? Cause they know who you are, maybe you were not living a good moment and stuff… but it’s hard to apologize with people you don’t like or people not well known by you..

I always apologize for doing wrong things. It takes me little time to realize I did a bad action. Therefore I’ am always forgiven by people… I hope it.

God is merciful and I say from the deep of my heart, ”’O God, be merciful to me, a sinner’. I know He  hears me and makes his decision.

It’s so easy to tell others what’s bad they have in them…
But what’s hard to do is pickin out your own thorns that pinch others…
& apologizing works as an oinment for the wounds we give them…
No one should avoid apologizing…
Apologizing never makes us smaller… it always makes us bigger…

I’ve experienced it so many times…
I’ve hurt alot of people… & alot of people hurt me too…
but I never avoided apologizing…
I always tried to be the first one to apologize whenever the relation got hurt…
Cuz my relations always have been more important than my ego…
If anyone apologizes… it may work as the water on fire…

but if no one does… it’d always be like fueling the fire…

The lesson’s called “I’m sorry” and you’re giving us an example about a roomate drinking all the milk from the fridge and didn’t apologized?Wow,i’m impressed. The thing is with saying that you’re sorry that sometimes most of us are afraid of getting our apology rejected or suffering the consequences, and i’m talking about something big,not eating/drinking all of something from the fridge lol.

When I make a mistake,I analyse it from both sides and if my side isn’t plausible enough, then yes,i say i’m sorry. And thats for the ones i’m not related to.

When it comes to my family, things are different. So saying that you’re sorry is simply letting go of your guard, simply relax and move on.

For me apologies and saying “sorry” depend on the personality of each person .

and to admit and say “sorry” is better than feeling guilty in secret

to  apologies  you  have  to  be   courage .  it  seem  to me  that  apology is  kind  of courage    to defeat yourself  and  speak  out  saying  i am  sorry  i  wronged   you   . persaonally,  it is  one  of  hardest  moment  when  i  say  sorry  but  the  persaon feel  comfortable  after  it
