Lesson

How come the front door is open? Didn't you close it before we went shopping?

I'm sure I did. I can't understand it.

Frankly, I smell a rat.

Me, too. I'm convinced that something is definitely wrong here.

We'd better call the police.

Smell a Rat = (feel that something is wrong)

Brazil

But the Brazilian Portuguese idiom "Com a pulga atrás da orelha", if translated literally into English, would acquire an entirely new meaning. "A flea in one's ear" means a sharp reproof. There is also the idiom "Fit as a flea", which means in a very good health. To mean the same, Brazilians would say"Forte como um touro"(=strong as a bull). So, fleas and bulls, altough of disparate sizes, share, in  people's mind, the same qualities of force, vigour, strengh, and power.
