One of winter’s best sports is hockey. It’s a fast moving game with lots of action. The players are graceful but aggressive at the same time.
Recently I went to a hockey game. I have only been to a few, but each time I have really enjoyed it. In the next conversation I tell Migs a little bit about how the game went.

John: You ever been to a Winterhawks game?
Miguel: No. What are the Winterhawks?
John: You know, it’s Portland’s hockey team.
Miguel: Oh, no I haven’t checked that out yet. Have you been to a game?
John: Yeah, I just went the other weekend. It was really cool.
Miguel: Was there lots of fighting?
John: Yeah, there were like five or six full on fights where the whole crowd stopped and the referees just let it happen.
Miguel: I’m kind of confused about that. Isn’t fighting illegal?
John: I think so, but I think because the crowd enjoys it so much they let them do it and it’s fun to watch.
Miguel: Did they win the game?
John: No, but that’s okay because it was banner night, so there was a contest for whoever could bring the best banner. And the friends I was with were finalists. They got to go out on the ice and show their banner to the crowd.
Miguel: What did it say?
John: It said Winterhawks kick ice.
Miguel: That’s pretty funny. So, did they win?
John: No, they lost.

I really enjoyed this game. My team didn’t win, but I had fun with my friends anyway. I was proud that they did so well in the banner contest.
Their banner was a play on words. It is a common expression among friends to say, ”.....kicks ass.” This means, ”.... is really good” or ”.... is the best.” However, this phrase is not very polite so please be careful! “Winterhawks kick ice” sounds like “Winterhawks kick ass.” It was a polite way to say the same thing in a funny way.
