Have you noticed a lot of people wearing red bandannas lately? In American culture, the name Rambo is synonymous with extreme violence and a red bandanna around the head. Sylvester Stallone first played Rambo in 1982 and the character, who is a veteran of the Vietnam war and skilled in all sorts of fighting, quickly became a cultural icon.

Now, more than 20 years, after the first Rambo movie, Stallone has once again picked up his giant gun to shoot a lot of people. Jason and Beren are excited to see it.

Jason:  Did you hear that heroes don’t retire, they only reload?

Beren:  I might have heard that. Are you talking about a certain hero named Rambo?

Jason:  Oh yes.

Beren:  John Rambo?

Jason:  None other. I would say the one and only except I saw about 50 of them walking down the street yesterday.

Beren:  That’s hilarious. They were going to the premiere of the new Rambo?

Jason:  I guess so.

Beren:  Is there like a tagline? Is that the tagline? Heroes don’t retire they just reload?

Jason:  Something like that.

Beren:  That’s awesome. I think First Blood is a really good movie.

Jason:  Yeah?

Beren:  It’s really good. Like, exploding arrow tips? Who has that besides Rambo?

Jason:  Why do they remake all these ‘80s action movies? They’re making a new Terminator. Can’t we come up with our own action classics?

Beren:  Who’s gonna be in the new Terminator though?

Jason:  Christian Bale.

Beren:  Oh, see, that’s the difference. Rambo is still Sly Stallone.

Jason:  It’s true.

Beren:  He just was like juicing up with the human growth hormones. He hasn’t aged a day. That, and a cocktail mixed with Botox.

Jason:  Has he aged a day though? Or does he look exactly the same.

Beren:  He looks like he’s melting, like his face is melting. But it’s still Sly.

Jason:  Well, he’s probably more sinister then. Probably kicks more butt.

Discussion

Jason misremembers the tagline of the movie Rambo, which is “Heroes don’t die, they reload.” But don’t you think “Heroes don’t retire, they reload,” makes a better tagline anyway?

Even though he gets it wrong Beren knows what he’s talking about. The one and only Rambo. Well, maybe not the one and only since Jason saw a bunch of people walking down the street dressed like Rambo.

What makes the new Rambo movie special is that it has the same star as the original movie. A lot of action movies get remade with new actors. For instance, the new Terminator will star Christian Bale instead of Arnold Schwarzenegger. But Beren loved the first Rambo movie, First Blood, and is glad the same guy is playing Rambo.

Beren suggests that Sylvester Stallone has gone to great lengths to keep himself looking young. Nonetheless, she says, his face doesn’t look so good.

But Jason doesn’t care. A messed-up face is fitting for a character like Rambo.

What action hero would you like to see “reload” and make a new movie?

It rocks! Sly Stallone will reload again and play Rambo in the remade movie. I love First, second and third blood starring him. Also I would love the new Terminator starring Arnold Schwartzeneger instead of a new actor. Both Schwartzeneger and Stallone are very hot. I love them!!!

Haha I saw this movie, it was a bit short but I liked it.

The original Rambo was a strong condemnation of the American govenment and the way it treated veterans of the Vietnam war. In fact, the whole movie can be viewed as a metaphor for the Vietnam war, with Rambo taking the place of the Vietcong, the local police being the French, and the National Guard being the US army, with the forests of the Pacific Northwest instead of the jungles of South East asia.

Rambo II and III were both really stupid, though.

I like the movie though it’s very brutal. I like it more than the last part of Rocky. There wasn’t much action in that movie. Rambo movies were all very good
