Everyone knows someone who’s writing a book and everyone knows someone in a band. But what about movies? Those are harder to make if you want to do it right. You need more than a guitar or a computer. You need lights and cameras and actors.
But there are a lot more movies out there than you think. You can find them on the Internet, but if you want to see them properly in a theater, there are always film festivals of all sorts all over the world.
If anytime a movie ends, you just want to watch another one, film festivals are for you. But Beren doesn’t really want to sit in a theater and watch a bunch of movies in a row. Listen to her and Devan talk about film festivals.
Dialog
1. Listen and Read - Listen to the audio and read the dialog at the same time.
2. Study - Read the dialog again to see how the vocab words are used.
Beren: You know what’s so weird to me is the concept of the film festival. Like, I have some friends who are going out of town to go to one and I know some friends who are making a movie and they’re going to submit it to a film festival, and it’s like so weird. I don’t know, maybe cause I’m not necessarily a movie-going person. I like watching movies at home, because it always changes how you react, like if other people are laughing you naturally want to laugh even if it’s not funny. I don’t know…
Devan: There’s so many film festivals too.
Beren: There’s hundreds. There’s hundreds. And there’s hundreds of underground offshoots of the main big one in the major city. It’s crazy to me that that many people are making movies.
Devan: You know when you see…like usually independent movies, and they’ll have 50 different film festival recommendation stamps across the…and reading all these titles, it’s insane. How can there be so many different festivals? And they all have different themes and stuff. It just makes you realize there are so many movies and you only hear about the main stuff that are coming out so it doesn’t seem like there’s so much, but there must be tons of movies coming out all the time if there’s all these different special-oriented festivals all over the place.
Beren: There has to be like thousands. I think that’s the cool thing about film festivals. If you go to a themed one, like Asian independent cinema, you’d be exposed to stuff you’d probably never get to see, you’re not gonna find in the video store, like Blockbuster or whatever.

Discussion
Beren prefers to watch movies at home, so the idea of spending hours and hours in a theater at a film festival is weird to her. But she agrees there is an impressive number of film festivals.
Devan thinks it’s interesting that film festivals are one of the only places to see lesser-known foreign films and independent films. Those movies are hard to rent, so if Beren wants to see them, she’ll have to find a good film festival.
Have you ever been to a film festival or submitted a movie to one? How do you prefer to watch movies?
