Hi Friends!
For many people in the U.S., Thanksgiving is one of the most important family holidays of the year. Because Thanksgiving is on Thursday, it’s common for employees and students to have Friday off, giving four days for travel and family reunion.
Unfortunately, some people are too far from home to make it back for Thanksgiving. Adam is studying at a college in Portland, Oregon – but his parents live in a far away place – so he won’t be going home for the weekend. Listen in to his conversation with Miguel to hear what his plans are.

Adam

Miguel:  Hey Adam, what are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?

Adam:  Well, I’m probably gonna eat a lot of food and go to sleep.

Miguel:  Where are you gonna get the food? Are you gonna make it, or is somebody else?

Adam:  Oh, I’ll, I’ll probably make it myself.

Miguel:  So you’re not going to go home and see your parents?

Adam:  No. They’re a little too far away right now.

Miguel:  Where do they live?

Adam:  They live in Georgia.

Miguel:  What city?

Adam:  Macon, Georgia.

Miguel:  So do you know how to cook, like, Southern Thanksgiving food? Are there any special recipes from the South?

Adam:  Uh, just some stuff my mom showed me. I’ll probably cook some chicken or some hamburgers and french fries, or something.

Miguel:  Wait a minute. Isn’t the typical Thanksgiving dinner turkey and mashed potatoes?

Adam:  Yeah, but she didn’t show me how to cook a turkey yet.

Discussion

I hope Adam has a good Thanksgiving, even though he’s so far away from home. He sounds pretty excited about it, even though he won’t get to have his mom’s homemade cooking.
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s always so much fun to go home and relax for 4 days and let my parents do all the work. My mom is a great cook and she always makes lots of wonderful food for Thanksgiving. My favorite thing that she makes is a special cranberry sauce that has oranges and jalepeno peppers. It’s amazing! I put it on everything I eat!
Happy Thanksgiving!
