For Christians, Easter is one of the most important holidays of the year. But for non-Christian and secular Americans, it’s kind of a weird one. This Sunday, people all over the US are going to hunt for colored eggs in their yards that were left there by a rabbit. You read that correctly.

People celebrate Easter with an Easter egg hunt. They dye eggs and then hide them so that other people can try to find them. Children like Easter because they usually get a basket full of chocolate eggs, which a giant bunny supposedly delivers to them. For college students, Easter means spring break, a week of no school and lots of partying. Now, just don’t ask what all this has to do with Jesus Christ and the resurrection!

Devan loves Easter, but Mason isn’t a fan. Listen to them discuss this unique holiday.

Mason:  So Easter is coming up, which is, you know, lame.

Devan:  Lame, what do you mean lame?

Mason:  I have a very conflicting relationship with Easter because it falls on my birthday one every three years.

Devan:  Oh, when’s your birthday?

Mason:  April 16th. So you know, I have these bad memories of none of my friends being able to come to my party because they had to go do lame Easter things.

Devan:  Like Easter egg hunts or dyeing Easter eggs?

Mason:  Yeah, all that crap. Totally lame.

Devan:  Yeah, I don’t know. I think Easter’s great. I love getting an Easter basket, and you always have your chocolate Easter bunny in your basket, and I love doing the Easter egg hunt. One year I found the golden egg and I won a prize.

Mason:  See this is another thing, I mean, as a bunny-owner in my older years, bunnies don’t lay eggs. Just another inaccuracy.

Devan:  Do you know how they celebrate it in France? It’s a giant bell that drops off the baskets.

Mason:  A bell?

Devan:  Like a Liberty Bell. So if you think a rabbit laying eggs is weird, try having a bell.

Discussion

This Sunday is Easter, and Mason isn’t looking forward to it. His birthday sometimes gets ignored because it falls on the same day as Easter, which is always on a Sunday in the spring.

Mason also thinks that the way we celebrate Easter is weird. Unlike Devan, he doesn’t enjoy dyeing Easter eggs or going on Easter egg hunts. He doesn’t understand the connection between bunnies and eggs. But as Devan points out, other countries have their own interesting ways of celebrating this holiday.

One reason bunnies and eggs are a part of Easter celebrations is that the holiday is associated with spring. Do you have a spring holiday or festival in your country? How do you celebrate it?

Yes, here in the Philippines we celebrated easter Sunday and it 's usually fall on Sunday and that day people should wake up early to catch the early mass and during the mass there is a special presentation. I dont have any idea about the relationship between a rabbit laying dyed egg.. but I dont think it is not lame because people here practicing that tradition like egg hunting etc.

Hi All. I had never heart about this holiday before reading this lesson. Even in western films and TV shows, we barely talk about Easter. The lesson gives us an idea about how it seems to be but what I want is to know what's the ROOT of this habit and when and where it was celebrated the first time.

Romania

Hello Everybody!

I want to tell you about Easter for those who has different religions and have no idea about this event.

First off all Easter is a religious celebration. Easter is the event when Jesus crucifixion took place, This it happened on the day of Friday, I mean today. After his death he was laid in a grave, he was burried and on Sunday he was no more in his grave. He ressurected. This has a symbol. It symbolise that, Jesus was crucifixed to realease the mankind from sins. So we consider that he sacrificed himself for us.

This is the religious happening.

Easter is celebrated in different ways in different countries and regions. So I can tell you about the habits from my country, Romania.

People dye eggs for Easter, tidy their homes, cook a lot of special foods. On the first day of Easter, Sunday they go to church, and after that everybody go home and have the lunch with their families. On the second day, Monday the boys and mans goes to the familiar girls and relatives homes with perfumes, they say a short poem, than they sprinke the girls with perfume:))In exchange the girls are offering colored eggs to them, and invites them to have a drink, to eat cakes and others. This day is preferable for boys, because they gather in small groups, goes from one house to other, just they drink and eat, and have fun everywhere, For the girls it;s not so much fun, because they have to stay all day in house waiting for sprinklers. I know it may sound weird, but thats the way it is here:))

So, I hope I could help to imagine this event.

Have a great weekend, and for the christians Happy Easter!!!

I'm not too religious person however I do like Easter for two or three reasons.

This is a good occassion to meet almost all members of your family.

When it's Easter time, I feel spring is coming very very fast, everything is getting green again:)

And of course, I have a few days off work so I can chill out.

Bad sides? Hmmm…there are some. For example, tidying up, and Easter Monday is dangerous for girls, they can get all soaked through then! Be careful this year girls!

We have Easter in Russia too, but it is Orthodox Christian holiday. It is more religious holiday. We celebrate Easter two weeks
later than Catholics. We dye eggs too, but we have no
bunnies, chocolate eggs, egg hunt an so on.
In Russia people go to the church, cook Easter cake,
dye eggs at Easter day.
We also have eggs fights. You need to choose one
boiled egg. Than two people knock each other eggs. You win if your egg is safe.
