A lot of female singer-songwriters became popular in the 1990s. Some of them, like Bjork and Tori Amos, still have a big following today. But others have pretty much disappeared. Remember the song “What if God was One of Us?” Can anyone say what Joan Osborne is doing these days?

PJ Harvey is another female rocker who first became famous in the early 90s. Although she isn’t as widely known as some of the others, her albums always get great reviews. Find out why Devan and Beren love her, too.

Beren:  You know PJ Harvey, I know you’re a fan.

Devan:  Oh yeah.

Beren:  She has a new album coming out with John Parish. Have you heard anything about it? It’s supposed to be amazing.

Devan:  I heard it was really good. But I haven’t heard it yet. But they’ve worked together in the past, and I think that they…

Beren:  What have they worked together on? ‘Cause everybody’s like “Oh yeah, John Parish,” and I don’t know…

Devan:  He’s produced with her before and I think they’ve done duos before. And I think that they have a really good dynamic, the two of them. So I’m really excited to hear this album.

Beren:  Totally. That’s awesome, ‘cause PJ Harvey’s one of those people…She’s one of the singers that every time I hear anything she does, I’m like, “This is awesome, I love it.” But she’s not very active as far as touring goes. It’s like always a few years between tours.

Devan:  Well the other great thing about her albums is every single one is so different. It seems like with every album she totally reinvents herself. Like that last album was all like simple and piano, and kinda like moody and creepy-sounding. But then before that was Stories from the City and that was her poppiest album, I think. So…

Beren:  I had a friend who after hearing Uh Huh Her hated PJ Harvey, like, “This is terrible,” and then when the next album came out, fell in love, like “This is the best,” and didn’t even know it was PJ.

Devan:  Yeah. She’s really versatile.

PJ Harvey’s new album is called A Woman a Man Walked By. She had help making the album from John Parish, a musician and producer. Devan and Beren have both heard that the album is really good.

Devan appreciates PJ Harvey’s versatility. Her albums all sound different. Each new thing she does is fresh and interesting. But Beren has a friend who hated one of her albums and loved another. Depending on what type of music you like, you might not enjoy everything PJ Harvey does.

John Parish and PJ Harvey are really good at making music together. What do you think it takes for two people to work well together? Have you ever worked with a partner on a project?
