Hello!
Miguel and I recently had a discussion about our families. One of the things that came up is the fact that my parents live 3000 miles away in New York, while I live in Portland, Oregon. Miguel only lives 100 miles from his family in Eugene, Oregon, so he was curious what it’s like to be separated by so much distance.
Listen in to our conversation to hear what I told Miguel.

Miguel:  Hey Beth, how is it to live so far away from your family?

Beth:  It’s kind of hard. You know, I miss everyone and it’s not always the same using email and the phone to keep in touch, but, you know, you find ways to let everyone know what you’re up to and to check in.

Miguel:  How did you make that decision to live so far away from home?

Beth:  I don’t know. It’s always been sort of natural to me to live in a place other than where I grew up.

Miguel:  Do your parents ever come out and visit you?

Beth:  Oh, yeah. They come to visit, or we go visit other friends in different parts of the country and try to arrange times to get together around the holidays and things like that.

Miguel:  Do you have, like, one particular holiday that you always try to get together for?

Beth:  We’re really big on birthdays. We try to see each other around our birthdays.

Discussion

I don’t know why, but living far away from home has never been a big deal to me. I went to college in Colorado and then lived there for a few years before moving to Oregon. It just seems natural for me to be out in the world doing my thing, always knowing that my parents and my childhood home are still in New York. I think I’ve always been an adventurous person, so it feels right to be doing things that are new and exciting.
Have a great week!
Beth
