Nobody expected very much from Susan Boyle when she first walked onto the stage of the reality show Britain’s Got Talent last year. In fact, many people in the audience, as well as the show’s judges, laughed at her or made fun of her because of how she looked. But once she began to sing, they changed their tune.

Susan Boyle wowed everyone with that first performance, and although she finished second on Britain’s Got Talent, she has gone on to become one of the top-selling artists of last year, with her album I Dreamed a Dream. Susan’s story is one reason why people say you “shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.” But some wonder if this overnight sensation really has enough talent and endurance for a long-lasting career in showbiz. Find out what Beren and Dale think.

Beren:  Dale, tell me about Susan Boyle. I don’t know anything about this lady. She just came out of nowhere. Everybody’s obsessed.

Dale:  What was really funny is that I got this email not too long ago to watch and listen to this person. It was such a surprise. I popped it open and you just kinda look at her going, “Who is this lady?” And all of a sudden, she just blew me away. She was such a surprising voice. It was very angelic, very operatic. It was very stunning to see something that refreshing and a voice that you…you actually kind of feel bad in some ways because you already judged a book by its cover.

Beren:  Whoa. Well, I heard she’s the second-best-selling artist in 2009.

Dale:  Not only that, I mean she just came out of nowhere to even to do that. She was on the British comedy Britain’s Got Talent.

Beren:  Oh, I don’t know about that. Is it like American Idol, or…

Dale:  It was actually Britain’s Got Talent and then America’s Got Talent came after. And so when Susan Boyle showed up there, her hits off of YouTube blew up, everybody talked about her. She’s just everywhere. And she still will be, for a long time, to be everywhere.

Beren:  Really? Does she tour?

Dale:  She’s starting to tour.

Beren heard a lot about Susan Boyle but she didn’t know who she was. Dale explains that he saw a video of the 48-year-old talent show competitor singing, and it blew him away. He thinks she has a beautiful voice.

Dale felt guilty after he watched the video of Susan singing, because he realized that he had judged her based on her appearance. He didn’t think she’d be a good singer because she wasn’t young or beautiful. But after he heard Susan sing, he realized that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.

Have you ever judged a book by its cover? What do you think will happen to Susan Boyle in the future?

I think it's not good that the audience laughed at her and made fun at her when she appeared at the stage. Also i guess it's not good to behave yourself without respect to a person whom you don't know judging only by his or her appearance.

As for the future of Susan Boyle i don't think that she will be on stage for a long time 'cause it's rather difficult in her age to change own life style and become a professional artist. Probably she would be rather tired of all these tours sooner or later. But of cause i wish her good luck if she really want it.

I think everybody judge people and things by first impression. And that’s fine, becase appearance is the only information that we have instantly. But appearance is a half deal. What we will think about the person afterwards complitely depends on that person. And Susan Boyle demonstrated it the best way!

The experience with Susan Boyle is an undeniable proof for how superficial people usually are. I guess that everybody of us judges or has judged a book by its cover. Unfortunately it became normal for our society to judge someone by his/her look, they even say "your look is your visiting card", which i agree to a certain extent. But it doens't mean that you should judge a person ONLY by his/her exteriour and make fun of it, if it doesn't suit today's exteriour standards, as the audience of Britain' Got Talent did at first. I'm proud of Susan Boyle proving the contrary.

Sometimes, I have been judged a book by its cover because I think appearance is the  first image  that you have.

well, it's fantastic !.. befor I was do that , I was judged a book by it's cover, I mean I judged on people by her\his appearance.. but now I learn something that even normal people may have something special o diffrent from other, so now I don't judged upon appeaance.. for Susan I think she will get more workload and she should ready for that.. good luck for her ..

Good lesson I like it ..

As far as "never judging a book by its cover,"  we do it all the time – it's called natural instinct. By prejudging or guessing a potential outcome by its cover (the cover of means vs results) can often be a matter of life or death.  As well, I have many times literally judged a book by its cover.  If the cover of a book can't grab my attention why would I think that what is written between the covers will do any more for me?  As well, with a potential entertainer – if the person doesn't try and get my attention with let's say, some appropriately applied makeup, and a little fixing up of the hair and the wearing of an appealing costume… Well my point is – if they won't take the time for me why would I judge that their talent will "make my day?"  Why would I want to take the time or spend the money banking on the idea that just maybe their talent will make up for their laziness in making or creating the illusion of a pretty or attractive cover? – meaning no offense to Ms. Boyle.

This just shows us again how superficial most of us really are.  Years ago, maybe even Ms. Boyle may have been considered beautiful – look at the Mona Lisa.  In today’s standards of what is beautiful – meaning what turns another on sexually – she may have been considered quite homely.

In general, I would guess to say that most of the readers of this article are just as superficial as any who may have been in the crowd or any of those judges who had seen Ms Boyle at first sight.

With television and live concerts a pretty voice isn’t enough to drive us all to the ticket counter.  What we want is something that will tweak us sexually – and quite frankly, sadly too, I must admit, Ms. Boyle just doesn’t do it for me.

I must also admit that if I never “happen” to hear her voice (her performance), my guess is that I will never go and see her in concert nor will I buy any of her music.

Now you can call me a pig or a lust-driven, sexed idiot slob or you can admit that I am being honest where most can’t or won’t be.  I hope Ms. Boyle the best of luck – I mean no harm nor do I mean to suggest any pessimism – I just hope that she can be grateful for the new found fame and take what she can get out of it – whether it turns out to be a long and satisfying career or ends up as so many – as last night’s leftovers, having been a “flash in the pan.”

I admit that I was one of those who didn't expect much from Boyle when she walked onto the stage for the first time. She was stunning. She has got a voice that nobody dreamt about. Yes she deserved to win, but I voted for diversity 'cause I thought that that group wanted to act in front of the queen very badly.

beautiful people often had more opportunities to be successful than the common. if a common people want to be successful, he/she should have something different from others~if no different, he/she will be common for life and it will be no use how hard he/she strives for.

yeah..the story of Susan really astonished me ..all the tv channels were showing the housewise who kept back her talent from the public…and now… i guess it will be very tiring tour for her…she's not prepared for such workload…but anyway she can try and do the best!)) wow, Susan!
