Sara:  So, what are you doing this weekend?

Steph:  Gosh. I don’t yet. It would be a nice weekend to go to the beach. But I don’t really have any plans. What about you?

Sara:  Well, my friend is turning 30 on Saturday so I’m gonna go to her birthday party.

Steph:  Ooh. Big 30th party.

Sara:  Yeah.

Steph:  That’s cool. What are you gonna get her?

Sara:  Well, I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about that. I feel like I should do something kind of momentous since she’s 30. But, maybe I’ll just get her some champagne or something.

Steph:  Yeah. They always have those cheesy turning 30 gifts.

Sara:  That’s true. I haven’t seen any of those in a long time though.

Steph:  You gotta go to the specialty shops and stuff, those card shops, ya know, in the mall.

Sara:  Right. Maybe I should check that out. But I think she’s planning on having a BBQ and just have a lot of people over. So, it should be fun.

Steph:  That does sound like a lot of fun. I wish I could go.

Sara:  Me, too.

Discussion

Wow! Turning 30 is a really big deal. People start to think of you as an adult. They start to expect you to act more responsibly too.
People usually have birthday parties to celebrate this rite of passage to adulthood. A lot of people go overboard on their 30th birthday because it’s their last chance to be a kid.
Is it the same where you live? Do people go overboard on their 30th?
