Lesson
Today I want to talk about a phrase that really expresses creativity.
It's no surprise but most people are not creative when it comes to thinking. They think what most other people in their country and culture think. It's hard to think on your own. It's hard to break away from the traditional thoughts that your parents, grandparents, and other people from your culture support. Sometimes it's a good and safe thing to follow tradition, but it's also incredibly important to be able to think for yourself. Even large companies run into this problem when they keep doing things one way just because that's the way they did them before. There is little thought, just following.
Anyway, the phrase for today that describes this kind of creative thinking is "thinking outside the box". It's a phrase we use a lot in English. We think it's a good thing. It means to always think about things from a new perspective and don't just blindly copy and believe what you hear in the news or from your parents. Don't just follow people because it's the easy thing to do. You need to "think outside the box", which is like moving beyond traditional thinking.
An example sentence is: "Our company is losing to faster moving and more creative companies. We need to think outside the box and come up with a new strategy if we want to compete in the business world"
I hope that makes a lot of sense. I've been writing these lessons each day starting with this online English course
I also hope you check out my blog of some random thoughts and opinions about different topics. It's a great way to learn English I think. I just started this blog and I'd love to know what you think. As always, your comments and likes are amazing!
