Lesson

I met a friend today at a pub.  Actually I was there with someone else but I saw him randomly.

Anyway, he seemed good.  He seemed happy and very successful in business.  He was "on the ball".

This is the phrase for today and it's a true story.  I think that "on the ball" is a phrase that originally came from sports, probably baseball.

Anyway, the way we really use it is a little different.  We say someone is "on the ball" when they are doing very well in life or just very sharp.

Being on the ball means you move quickly and you are clear.  It's a bit like the feeling of having a coffee and a healthy mind.  If you start like that and are handling things well, you are "on the ball", at least for that moment.
