Brothers and sisters can be a lot of fun. But sometimes cousins are even better. They’re family, so you share a special bond with them. But you probably don’t have to see them every day, and you don’t have to worry about sibling rivalry with your cousins.

Ella recently went to Thailand, where her family is from. She met 13 cousins she hadn’t seen since she was a very young girl. Find out if they hit it off as she and Jason talk about cousins.

Jason:  So I only have one family member who lives here in town, and it’s a cousin. I really don’t see him all that much. He’s really cool, but, I don’t know, for some reason we just don’t call each other out of the blue very often. Are you very close with your cousins?

Ella:  Well, I wouldn’t say close. I just met 13 of them when I was in Thailand last month, which was a trip. I was not prepared for that. I have a lot of cousins.

Jason:  Yeah, I think I might have, like, 14 total, let alone 13 I’ve never met.

Ella:  Yeah, that was just my dad’s side. It was weird, because I hadn’t seen them since I was really young, but when I met them I felt an instant connection, like, “Weird, I don’t know these people, but I automatically love them.”

Jason:  That’s amazing. So you had a connection immediately upon seeing them for the first time?

Ella:  Yes. It was weird. Like on my mom’s side and my dad’s side, the cousins I met, it was really awesome. I’m just overall pretty close with my family.

Jason:  Do you think it’s important to stay in touch with your cousins?

Ella:  I definitely do. I try to talk to them at least once a week.

Jason:  Wow. All of them?

Ella:  Facebook most of them. But I’ll be on the phone with a couple different ones every week.

Jason:  Woah. I gotta get better about hanging out with my cousin.

Ella:  You should.

Jason:  I’ll give him a call really soon.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Jason lives in the same town as his cousin, but they rarely see each other, even though they like each other and have things in common. Ella has many more cousins than Jason. In fact, she just met 13 cousins on a trip to Thailand. As soon as she met them, she felt a strong connection to them.

Ella thinks it is important to stay in touch with your cousins. She keeps up with her cousins through Facebook and talks to them on the phone as often as possible. She thinks Jason should make more of an effort to spend time with his cousin, especially since they are lucky enough to live in the same town.

How many cousins do you have? Are you close with them? How do you stay in touch?

The first mistake I made when I joined this website, is that I came here with the solely hope to hone my English.

Another mistake I made. it that I only relied on the published lessons and vocabularies to sharpen my skills.

My third mistake, was to go in the chat rooms and wait for the first member to direct a bad word to another, and charge him with all the curse words I could spare (: . I ended up being banned, not clever.

My fourth mistake is that I took so long to start commenting on the daily lessons.

But now I on here, mainly to read other people’s comments, I read their blogs and forums, I realized how theirs words and thoughts touched me, how close I were to those individuals who were oceans and miles away. I fell in love with the things we shared, and I was mesmerized by our differences. But love always prevails and I became more tolerant of others, this website had humbled and molded me in a way that had affected positively my overall being. I’m better at communicating, and I just discovered that I could put 4 sentences together and convey a message, (:

I like to call all of you my mentors, all of you commenting on here. The level of knowledge that is being displayed here is just phenomenal.

Thanks for all your kind words and remarks; they make me stronger and wiser. Hopefully by the end of 2012 I could cling my diploma in Wizardry. Tongue out

Snoopy, I am overly sensitive and your words  has stricken a chord   in my heart. Yes, strange enough  I  consider all of you  as part of me  and above all, we have no strings attached, we are not only learning english  ,along the way  we are also building up a  bond among us , let´s keep it that way ever.

Those kinds of family themed lessons are slippery grounds for me; I really don’t know how to tackle them. My family is scattered all over the face of the earth and it’s so broad it really hard to keep up with all of them, trust me people it is true.

I was conceived as a result of an affair, my father was supposedly married and  had his legit family, very well-off folks, if I can call it that, on my father’s side, I have siblings all of them are older . And of course, none of them have really considered me to be part of the family, well I couldn’t careless either.

My mother was relatively young and poor when she had me, her family didn’t approve of her being a mother. So one day she did the unthinkable; she left her 3 year-old baby (snoopyboy (: ) at my father’s work, without his consent… and then she went poof (vanished). So my father taken aback by her action didn’t quite know what to do. Obviously, you can’t come back from work carrying a toddler and tell your wife ” hey honey, look what I found a kid, let’s keep him, shall we?”…I don’t know maybe he could have done that. But instead he did something that I’m forever grateful: he handed the toddler to a lady that I’ll grow up to call “mom”. For all I knew that was the only family I had, I was technically adopted or fostered but I really had no clue. People will come to our home and say how I resembled my adoptive siblings, and I would agree. So yeah, I had cousins, adoptive ones if I can refer to them as such, but we never gathered on Christmas or any other holidays, we just meet casually from time to time. However I was on good terms with my brother and sister, especially my brother who fought tooth and nail to help me through school financially, he was only 6 years older than I, he was 24 when really took the role of the father figure of the family and provided to us. My sister is the only girl I ever fought and she kicked my arse all the times, kudos to her… I dare her to try now (: but I love her to the death. My guardian as I like to refer to my (adoptive) mother, loved me unconditionally, I wasn’t an easy child to bring up, very sickly and at times too demanding, always in need of an extra attention over the others.

Well, I ended meeting with biological mother at age 20, circa 21. I showed no emotion at all, a forged smile and a cold hug. I remember telling her those sharp words “it’s too late to try to raise me now, I’m an adult”. I was shown the doors and forcing me to be on my own for the first time, forcing me to be a man. Soon after I meet her, I met all the rest of her family the ones I never knew existed… I wasn’t too excited about it. But in the back of my head my true family is the one that fostered me since my innocent age of 3 until adulthood. I like to brag about having two mothers, but one family.

But English, baby is becoming some kind of virtual family to me by the day (:

Who else think E,baby is like family?

I cannot say that my cousins are very funny. I did not see them for a long time ,The last time when I spoke to one of them was a big argument between us.So sometimes I prefer staying alone to staying in touch with them. All kind of things can generate all ways of arguments.Sometimes it is the better to avoid them because the health is the best thing on the earth.

That sounds really great Christiann. I´m really happy for you. You can´t choose your family, so it´s a real blessing if you really like them. ...and it seems that you have a lot family members to like ;)

I have to admit that I´m not very close to my cousins. In one part of my family many of them are a lot older than me and we don´t share the same interests. In fact some of them are real rednecks – sorry cousins! In the other part of my family I like my cousins much more although I don´t see them very often but last week I made the desicion to change it because one of them lives really near to my place. He´s quite cool so I hope we could see each other more regularly.

Cristal, I am not a quitter on my dreams but the reality  is that  there are family issues  so strong  that  is unrealistic  for me  to bring to the table an olive branch  and that they would forget the past   and start  over again.

I like julito’s dream.Yeah that’ll be very nice if all we have a very strong family bond but such a thing can not come true at least in my life.I think having a very good and strong family relationship is one all human beings need to have maybe because it lets them not to feel their loneliness
