Amy:  I just heard of the craziest way to quit smoking.

Marni:  Really? Do tell.

Amy:  A good friend of mine was hypnotized.

Marni:  Really?

Amy:  Yes! And she really believes that it has worked. I mean, she hasn’t had a cigarette in six months.

Marni:  Was she a smoker for long? I mean, was she really…

Amy:  Years and years, yes.

Marni:  Wow. OK. That’s fascinating. You know, I know a lot of people who have quit smoking, a lot of friends and family. And they’ve all tried various methods, but I have actually never known anyone who’s done hypnosis, so I think that’s really interesting. I mean I’ve had friends who’ve gone cold turkey, which…I just really admire them, because they stuck to it, and I know it was hard.

Amy:  Do you think some of those tools can help, like the patch or that kind of thing?

Marni:  You know, I think it’s probably just dependent on the person, and I think some people have a strong willpower and a real desire to quit. And I’ve known people who have literally been like, “This is stupid,” and stopped and never gone back. But then I’ve known people that have also needed a patch or, you know, have used those fake cigarettes, those electronic ones, for that hand-to-mouth contact, to sort of ween them off that. And the whole thing is just very fascinating to me. I have to be honest, it makes me really grateful that I was never a smoker.

Amy:  Definitely.

Amy tells Marni about a friend of hers who was hypnotized in order to quit smoking. She was a smoker for many years, but it’s now been six months since she had a cigarette.

Marni says she knows many people who have tried to quit smoking. They’ve tried lots of different methods, from using fake cigarettes to going cold turkey. She thinks it takes a lot of willpower and a strong desire to quit smoking.

Have you ever tried to quit smoking? What advice would you give someone who wanted to stop smoking?

Thanks God i have never smoked. I tasted two or three times and i didn´t like it.

For people who would like to quit smoking, i will tell you my father’s case: he used to smoke over twenty cigarettes a day.

Some day a doctor told him, you better quit smoking or children will pay consecuenses. He smoked at home and we were smoking with him too.

He decided to quit smoking just by his willpower, he says that he dreamed himself smoking a bunch of cigarrettes, two weeks after no tasting more, smoking had gone.

I think “willpower” is as cheap as dificult way por quit smoking.  I don´t know if i could do it, i can´t quit eating “taquitos”, they are my adiction jaja

Butta, you are right.  I can also relate a story . My mother was in the hospital and I usually everyday  went there to be with  her. A person in his forties( a heavy smoker) was brought in  with acute respiratory failure  . The hospital staff couldn´t do anything but to put  him  under oxygen   mask . Suddenly  I heard a commotion  in the ward, the fact was that a nurse  discovered him smoking and at the same time breathing the oxygen. I  was told that this combination could had been  potentially letal     not only to him but to everyone else.

Dear Butta,  Interesting that years ago I was giving the same advise : I f you put pressure  on someone  (with the best intention) to quit an addiction ,you only reinforce that addiction on that person. It would be better  to say:my friend , try  to cut down  on  cigarettes . You don´t need to smoke that much.

I’m trying to quit smoking just because to have a bad health is not my priority at the moment. I hope that’s enough to resist temptation. :)

Quitting smoking is not easy unless….... My cousing and I had to take to a hospital  a friend, she didn´t speak english  nor her husband  and as there was a lot of paperwork to do  and talk to the doctors they asked for our assistance. She was a heavy smoker and the studies shown that she had a lung cancer that ultimately sent her to the grave. My cousing at that time was also smoking  but after seen  the grisly studies that came from the laboratory immediately  quitted.
