St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday. But in the US, we’ll take any excuse to party. Although there are many people whose families came here from Ireland, you don’t have to be an Irish immigrant to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day, American-style. Just make sure you remember to wear green. Otherwise, you might get a pinch. Hear Devan and Jeff talk about their St. Patrick’s Day plans.

Devan:  So what are you doing for St. Patrick’s Day this year, are you gonna go out and drink green beer?

Jeff:  Nothing.

Devan:  Nothing? Really? You’re not gonna wear all green and get a party hat and wear a shamrock and get wasted at an Irish pub?

Jeff:  No. No pubs, no pints, no parades. It’s just a kinda cheesy American thing to make a buck.

Devan:  You think it’s just commercialized here?

Jeff:  Yeah. Just like a bunch of…well, every other major holiday here.

Devan:  You’re such a party pooper, Jeff. If I see you on St. Patrick’s Day, and you’re not wearing green, I’m gonna pinch you.

Jeff:  I’m a party animal, not a party pooper. Just not on St. Paddy’s Day.

Devan:  You’re still getting pinched.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Devan asks Jeff about his St. Patrick’s Day plans. He says he isn’t going to do anything on St. Patrick’s Day. He thinks it is an overly commercialized holiday, and he doesn’t like to celebrate it.

Devan, on the other hand, enjoys St. Patrick’s Day. She likes to go to a pub and drink green beer. In some US cities, there are big parades on St. Patrick’s Day.
It’s also common for people to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. In fact, if you don’t wear green, you might get a pinch. Devan calls Jeff a party pooper and says that she is going to pinch him if she sees him on St. Paddy’s Day without any green.

Is St. Patrick’s Day celebrated in your country? If you see someone who isn’t wearing green on St. Paddy’s Day, will you pinch them?

CatcheR, from Ireland, from Irish pubs where people (got to be Irish, or will be a little bit awkward)  with their families gather—drink, joke, talk.

St. Patrick, the holy and tutular man
His beard down his bosom like Aaron’s ran:
Some from Scotland, some from Wales, will declare that he came,
But I care not from whence now he’s risen to fame;
The pride of the world and his enemies scorning
I will drink to St. Patrick, today in the Morning!
He’s a desperate big, little Erin go brah;
He will pardon our follies and promise us joy,
By the mass, by the Pope, by St. Patrick so long
As I live, I will give him a beautiful song!
No saint is so good, Ireland’s country adorning:
Then hail to St. Patrick, today, in the morning!

Argentina

Yes, in Argentina we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and most young people go out to bars and pubs and drink beer there or in the streets next to them. It’s a lot of fun.

I love St. Patrick’s Day and the Irish!!! Sadly we don’t celebrate it in Germany so no, obviously I don’t pinch people that aren’t wearing green. I always remember it though and never forget to wear green and go down the Irish Pub for this occasion. :)

This is an older Irish blessing that I have always liked. I have been to several weddings of Irish people (I am almost half Irish), and this blessing is often read in a “toast” to the couple.

(For those who do not know, a “toast” is given by wedding celebrants in honor of the bride and groom. People hold up their glasses and give their blessings and wishes. A toast can be simple like “Congrats to the happy couple!” or it can be more sophisticated, using a prayer, poem, etc.)

This is the Irish blessing:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

As I see it, it must be tremendously fun, even though rather weird occasion) I wish I had ever taken part this event, however it’s not such a common festival where I live

You know, meaning the description of the festival as it’s written above, in Russia we have similar St. Patrick’s  Day celebrations almost every weekend after football matches (it even doesn’t matter whether your team has won or not) except for the fact you’re often more likely to be pummeled instead of being pinched =)
