TV[/def] can be pretty brutal. Contestants often cry, fight with each other, and sometimes even get hurt. The new movie The Hunger Games takes the idea of brutal reality television to the next level. In the film, 24 teenagers have to fight to the death on a deserted island for others’ viewing pleasure. The games are also a way for the corrupt government to punish its citizens for rebelling.

Whether or not you think something like that could ever happen in real life, the idea must have struck a chord with audiences. The books that the movie is based on were bestsellers, and now the film is attracting millions of viewers as well. Find out what Jason and Amy think about The Hunger Games.

Jason:  Everyone is talking about The Hunger Games.

Amy:  Yeah, I know. It’s a huge movie. It’s number one. The books were really popular, too, that it was based on. And it’s pretty good. It’s pretty interesting.

Jason:  So, the idea is these teenagers have to kill each other for everyone’s entertainment?

Amy:  Yes. It’s for everyone’s entertainment, and it’s also because there was a rebellion against the corrupt government, and so these Hunger Games are sort of a punishment for that rebellion.

Jason:  Wow.

Amy:  And it’s televised, like a Survivor reality TV show, but with much higher stakes.

Jason:  That sounds really terrifying to be living in that society.

Amy:  Definitely. But the thing that’s interesting is that it almost seems like it’s not that far-fetched, you know? Like it’s sort of a more extreme version of things that you can identify from things that we see, like reality TV and how it can kind of be manipulative.

Jason:  The games are a punishment. Do people enjoy watching them though?

Amy:  Yes.

Jason:  Well, I guess that’s good for them. I’d like to have a punishment I enjoy, I suppose, if I have to be punished.

Amy:  Well, the people who enjoy it the most, I think, are the ones on top.

Jason:  Don’t they always?

Amy:  Yeah.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Jason and Amy discuss the popular new movie, The Hunger Games. Amy saw the movie, and she thinks it is interesting. It is about a corrupt society in which the government forces teenagers to fight to the death each year for the public’s entertainment and as punishment for a rebellion. Amy says some ideas in the movie aren’t really as far-fetched as they might sound at first.

Amy compares the idea behind The Hunger Games to reality TV. She says that the Hunger Games are like a more extreme version of Survivor, a reality show in which people compete to see who can remain on a deserted island the longest.

Do you think you would be able to survive on a deserted island? Could something like the Hunger Games ever happen in real life?

I think I wouldn´t be a great survivor…

” the hunger games” sounds more fiction than reality. but when you go back in time and think about the  romans you think it could happen in the far future.

Well, I think these kind of movies are not only to keep people entertained; They also have a message and I enjoy trying to discover what the message of the writer of the book is. I mentioned the writer because he/she was the one who created the plot at the very first place.

I think that most of us have  dreamt of  living the life  of a  Robinson Crusoe ,I  can imagine myself living  on a deserted island in Indonesia,  eating  ripe mangoes  and fresh fish caught from the ocean.  Bye, Bye , EB friends, see you no more.  LOL

I haven’t watched the movie yet, but in the nearest future I will hopefully do it.

To tell the truth, I would  like to live on a desert island, but I have so many conditions to do it. Firstly, I should feel safe. Secondly, I don’t want to starve. And thirdly, I want to be with my beloved man there. Thus, I have all I need  without going to a desert island.

Well, I’d better stay at home.:)

I don´t like reality shows  ,unfortunately  our TV is  plagued with them  and consumed by viewers   as it were candy .  Actually I believe  that these programmes  send a message that  distort the reality  and worst , most of them are  targeting  our youth. This movie might  be a blockbuster  but  what kind of entertainment  is   to watch young people  being killed   each other  for whatever reason  they might have ? Yell

hmmm, I liked this lesson … :]

I don’t know the Hunger Games, but it reminds me of a movie I had seen before, but those victims weren’t teenagers, but they were prisoners and they were put on a deserted island having to fight each other until death and the only survivor will be released from being imprisoned. It was a deal between the government and a producer who was sure that the public would be really entertained and he would achieve great success and it really did.

Frankly, I enjoyed watching it, but I had the thought that it was so brutal and so far-fetched to happen in reality..

For the questions, I don’t know whether I can survive or not, but it depends on how difficult the challenges are, furthermore cruelty like Hunger Games can’t be ever realistic, it’s far from humane nature and acts, it’s just fantasy for enjoyment and excitement.. Wink

Something like the Hunger Game isn´t far-feteched but being so brutal it would face a lot of opposition from Human Rights organizations at first. There´s a sadistic thing about taking pleasure in other´s suffering.

I don´t think I´ll ever make it through the first day on a deserted island. Let alone under such harsh conditions.

I agree with you. :)

I like and respect all kinds of movies. The quality of the staging and  the quality of the play of actors are very important to me to fall in love with movie and to add to my collection of the movies which I like to review from time to time ;)

Lesya, I think he can make it, though he has gone a long way to get into vamprie shoes. They say that a good actor can do different characters successfully.

I like fantasies and don’t get me wrong, horror movies, like ‘what lies beneath’. With some element of mystery, thriller…

I think Tim Curry pulled it off successfully portraying a demonic Clown, Pennywise, in the classic horror movie “It”. Great transformation, a versatile actor :)
