Fighting is part of being in a family. Few families get by without an argument every once in a while. But when an argument turns into a feud, a family might be divided for years, or even generations.

Often, family feuds start over little things, and then the fight grows until it’s out of control. Different members of the family might join in and take sides, until whole branches of the family are cut off from each other. Hear Amy tell Jason about her own family’s feud.

Amy:  I have this one uncle, Jason, who my part of the family hasn’t talked to for, like, a decade.

Jason:  Wow. Do you know where he is and what he’s doing and stuff?

Amy:  He’s living his life. I mean, I don’t know too much about it, but my side of the family, it was my grandparents actually, just got into a huge family feud with him and his family, and now there’s just no more communication with him and his whole family.

Jason:  Wow. So his little section of the larger family is just completely separate from everyone else?

Amy:  Yeah. Isn’t that crazy to just have a family feud that, you know, breaks up the family permanently? Especially, you know, years later nobody even remembers exactly what it was that caused the fight.

Jason:  Yeah, it’s one thing to have a black sheep in the family, someone that maybe isn’t as responsible as everybody else. But it’s another to have all communication, all ties severed.

Amy:  Right. And then different parts of the family start to choose sides.

Jason:  I wonder, do you think it’s getting to be time where it might be able to be, you know, smoothed over?

Amy:  Well, actually, it’s funny you should ask that because I just became Facebook friends with one of the uncle’s kids. And so maybe the younger generation will finally bridge that divide.

Jason:  Internet ends family feud.

Amy:  Yes.

Amy tells Jason about a feud in her family. Her grandparents and her uncle got in a fight many years ago. The fight got bigger and bigger and other members of the family chose sides. Now Amy and her parents haven’t spoken to her uncle or other members of his family in over a decade.

Jason says it’s common to have a black sheep in the family, someone who isn’t as responsible as his relatives and often gets into trouble. But it is less common to have a family feud that causes a division within the family. Still, some families do experience family feuds.

Jason asks Amy if she thinks the feud in her family can be ended any time soon. She says that the younger generation may be able to end it. Amy is now friends with one of her uncle’s children—Facebook friends, that is.

Have there ever been any major feuds in your family? Who is the black sheep in your family? Are there any fights happening in your family right now?

Fortunatley never…
My Parents taught us that when you live with a ‘Family…’
Always think of them… before you think of yourself…
& you’ll never have a dispute…
& we all followed them…
Even after them both…
Me & my siblings still walk on the way they told us to walk…

I’m not going to have family feud, because there’s no black sheep in my family, I’m the only child but honestly it’s not fun at all, :D

hmmm.. family feuds !! this is quite bad. There was a feud in my family from a short time ago. I can’t tell about the problem, but I felt just that selfishness and mis-acting took part in the quarrel. Things mustn’t have ended like this with a feud, but it just happened.

it’s funny why the majority of uncles and aunts are in a feud ?! I guess it’s filthy lucre that often sever  friendship ties or even worse , the blood ties .unfortunately my uncle had such a feud but in this argument my father was not the culprit ,the blacksheep was my uncle and anyone in the familly had admitted that but my cousins had no other way but to take their father’s side ,at that time we were all just infant child and playmate but after our fathers broke up we cut up our friendship alsoFrownnow after a decate that our relationship smoothed over we speak with each other or go to each others’ house occasionally but after such a long coldness we can not be too friendly ,this is the broken glass that can never be mended

family feud is something that i´ve experienced and to some extent has affected my life. my uncle and my father got into a fight many years ago. it was all about money i wonder how money could easily separate too families. at first it was just a simple fight that any family could go through, but soon things grew up to be complicated untill the two families definitively cut off with each other. it was so tough to embrace the situation in the begining but we had to face up to it.

although my father was not the culprit he sveral times took the initiative and put his pride aside to smooth it over and start a new page. things got worse when other problems took place, now all family ties are completely severed and there is no possibility or hope to get together again :( how tough life is!

Yes, I agree. A family feud might erupt with a slight argument, but it can also be solved with a slight fragment of tolerance and this, unfortunately does not seem to be present in many peoples hearts…

Anyone got through those disagreements, fighting, feud and then getting sulky for some time. ‘Hate’ is too much I think. Well, it depends on a person actually. You know they say that life is much easier for easy-going people with open and forgiving mind. Smile

RYO , take the part that you like most but  the dialogue mentions that sometimes  petty quarrels get out of control  and divide a family for years, for instance  Amy´s  uncle.

RYO hello. From  Merriam Webster´s dictionary   : a prolonged quarrel… a lasting conflict between families or clans marked by violent attacts made for revenge.

Family Feud,it’s a huge problem in it’s self some times it causes bad result  or maybe it causes good result when it could be giving some one a lesson to be reasonable and reliable . It doesn’t just break the family but it has a very bad feeling like the hate any one can feel those bad feelings . We should live with our family in peace , love and dtanding side by side with each other . Thank you and have a good night .

Feuding is always stressful, painful and exhausting. It also depends how you immune to that. Some people who grew up in always loud exchange of messages just take it for granted. But those who were surrounded by loving and peaceful people, like Ryo said, are suffering from all those eruptions. And it’s, unfortunately, inevitable. Sitting at the table, party’s going, lots of guests – all of a sudden somebody breaks a topic about politics and that’s it! The feud started and ended up with a long silence after. Or there’re people who just need that to let the steam out. They’re nagging, nagging and nagging, crying and crying and suddenly they get to a person who is  an alive being too and who retaliates and who will not! Both sides with “bruises “. But there’s the difference, the one who started it, goes off happily and the one who was being attacked is having a headache. Thank God, I grew up in a loving family. And who is not as my Dad should be feuding around. He went through the WWII, but he always controlled himself.  A man of character. So let’s cut it out, all those feuding.  Are we tough?  Wink
