Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Even though some of the most beautiful things ever written in the English language were written as poetry, it’s hard to find many Americans today who frequently read poetry. Maybe it reminds them of a hated high school English teacher, or they think they just aren’t deep enough to understand it. Maybe poetry seems boring, stuffy, or old fashioned to them. Yet great poetry, if given the chance, can be as exciting to read as a great song is to listen to. Hear Jason and Amy’s thoughts about reading poetry.

Jason

Amy:  Do you read poetry, Jason?

Jason:  No. I read so much poetry as an English major in college that I just haven’t developed an appetite for it yet.

Amy:  That’s funny, because I was an English major, but I somehow got away with hardly reading any poetry at all.

Jason:  What? Really?

Amy:  I mean, I took a couple classes, but I was always reading more novels and stories. I’ve always been a little afraid of poetry.

Jason:  What’s scary about it?

Amy:  Well, it just seems like you might not get it, you know?

Jason:  Yeah.

Amy:  But lately I’ve been reading more, and I’m so into it. I love poetry.

Jason:  What’s your favorite?

Amy:  Well, I’ve been reading some contemporary stuff, but then I’ve also been reading a lot of Emily Dickinson.

Jason:  Oh, I was going to say, if you’re worried about not understanding the poetry, you could just read poetry that nobody understands, like Emily Dickinson.

Amy:  Yeah. I mean, a really good poem is great because you can kind of partly understand it, or different people can understand it in different ways. You know, there isn’t one right answer.

Amy asks Jason if he likes to read poetry. Jason says that he read so much poetry in college, he isn’t interested in reading it now. Amy was an English major in college like Jason, but she did not read a lot of poetry. Recently, she has become more interested in poetry.

Amy says that she used to be scared of poetry. She worried that she wouldn’t understand it or would interpret it incorrectly. But now she realizes that poetry can mean different things to different people. There is more than one “right answer” when it comes to poetry.

Do you like reading poetry? Describe your favorite poem.

I‘m completely in agreement with ChacheR’S view。Yeah,i suppose it doesn’t suit a large number of people at present。 so i’d rather prefer song than music to express my thought。

I don’t like poem, it’s because I don’t understand it, If I love a girl I will directly say and prove it, I’m not kinda romantic person so I don’t think I will write a poem, I don’t own such a beautiful words contained with a deep feeling, Not me :D. When I was in high school I learned Indonesian literature and I think it was too complicated more than English, we have huge literature just like English, OH I wasn’t into it at all.

There are a lot of poems which people don’t understand or they understand it in different way because the poet-artists write poems to often show a world of sadness, hurt feelings and melancholic ( it depends on artist of courseSmile

I like the proverbs like:

“No joy without annoy., “While there’s life, there’s hope.”,”There are better days ahead.”;”Home is where the heart is”.etc

I’m truly fond of poetry! Moreover, in case I’m in specific mood, I wouldn’t mind writing a few on my own)) And in fact, I don’t believe poetry to be so either weird or odd so only selected persons are able to get it. Furthermore, poetry isn’t such a stuff needed to be perceived directly and literally. In this case, as I see, the shape of author’s expression is more important than the content – that’s the whole thing! You should feel it by your heart, feel your soul thrilling and specific sense of immortal wisdom percolated through to your mind. That’s totally priceless!

Buttafly, “I’ll paint a rainbow” – is a pure magic! huge and brillian! I’ve taken to it at once!)

Julito, I appreciate your humor.:)

Once a man from Ebaby wrote “Irene forever” as a shout on his profile. I asked him to delete these words as well as  my photos. I was right. I hope you understand me now.:)

This one is my second profile, as I deleted my prior one. It was not simple to do, but now I feel better.

When some day I leave Ebaby, my profile will stay here forever, at least untill Ebaby deletes it.:)

Poetry is the whole world for those who understand the strength of words trown out of the heart with all the impulsive thirst of each attempt to open the deepest spots of the soul.

I used to compose poems long ago, but I lost my wish to do it now. Maybe I don’t have enough emotions that could push me towards doing it, or maybe I  became wiser when  stopped believing in mystical love.  No, not stopped, rather became more careful while  accepting  or giving love.

Love is a fire that burns you inside: you fly up thinking of endless happiness that will keep you hovering forever. You compose poems and live in a fairy-tale  for awhile. “I love you!”, cry the heart. After that you got awakened from your dream  in order to realise  that all is finished, and a stream of words  is pouring out on the paper. ” I’m dying for you….”, you burst out  crying.

Stop crying… Be yourself…Be wise! Not allow  others to rule your life. If you are loved by God, you will be presented with LOVE that will make you happy for some period of your life. But remember, there is nothing forever. Even love has the end.

Note, I don’t mean parents or children. This LOVE is presented to us from God for forever and ever.

My favourite poem is “I loved you” by a Russian poet, Alexander Pushkin.

I loved you and my love may still be there,
Deep in my soul remains to stay aglow.
That should not cause you any more despair –
I do not want to hurt you any more.
I loved you unrequited in still wonder
Through bouts of jealousy and diffidence.
I loved you so sincerely and tender –
God bless you with such love of someone else.

All my devotion and love to the great Russian poets as A.S. Pushkin, M. J. Lermontov, N.A. Nekrasov, S.A Yesenin.

Poetry is a kind of music, it’s a melody of soul.

However there are lots of poems that are difficult to understand. Authors like to encode their poems carefully that’s why it sometimes take a time to comprehend the sense within it.

I recollect one day at school when all pupils should learn one poem they love by heart and to declaim it in front of public. :)

This poem was and it is still my favourite since that day.

My favourite poem (written by Sergey Yesenin)

TO  KACHALOV’S DOG

Come, Jim, give me your paw for luck,

I swear I’ve never seen one like it.

Let’s go, the two of us, and bark

Up at the moon when Nature’s silent.

Come, Jim, give me your paw for luck.

Stop licking me, pet and please do

At least heed this advice I’m giving.

Of life you haven’t got a clue,

You do not realise life is worth living.

Your master’s kind, a man of note,

And visitors his home are thronging,

They all admire your velvet coat

Which smilingly they love to fondle.

You’re devilish handsome for a dog,

So charming, trusting, unsuspicious,

Not asking if you may or not,

Like a drunken pal, you plaster kisses.

Dear Jim, I know a great variety

Of visitors of all sorts call,

But have you seen her here, the saddest

And the least talkative of all?

I’m sure she’ll come here. In my absence

Please catch her eye. Go kiss her hand for me,

For all my heart or fancied errors asking

Forgiveness of her in humility.

To quote from one of my favorite movies, Dead Poets Society:

We don’t read and write poetry because it is cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of human race and the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business and engineering. These are the noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for! To quote from Whitman,

“oh, me, oh life! Of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless—of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?”

Answer that you are here that life exists and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse – the powerful play goes on… and you may contribute a single verse, what will your verse be?

I read poems sometimes and I really love poetry. However, always there are some poems that I can’t understand.
I love a lot of Iranian poets but reading English poems is difficult. Among English poets I love “Shel Silverstein”. His poems are easy to read and understand and of course they are pretty interesting.

Here is his peom named “skin stealer” :

This evening I unzipped my skin
And carefully unscrewed my head,
Exactly as I always do
When I prepare myself for bed.
And while I slept a coo-coo came
As naked as could be
And put on the skin
And screwed on the head
That once belonged to me.
Now wearing my feet
He runs through the street
In a most disgraceful way,
Doin’ things and sayin’ things
I’d never do or say.
Ticklin’ the children
And kickin’ the men
And dancin’ the ladies away.
So if he makes your bright eyes cry
Or makes your poor head spin,
That scoundrel you see
Is not really me -
He’s the coo-coo
Who’s wearing my skin.

I saw at school a movie called “The Dead Poets Society”, and now the Ebaby proposes that theme, what coincidence!

On that movie the teacher tryied to show to the students that poetry could be something nice and that everyone can do poetry and he encouraged the students to make their own poems.

____

Poetry is something beautiful, ‘cause is the expression of humans feelings and show the beautiful side of humans, but is sad that today they are used just to win girls, unfortunately :(

____

I can’t say that I don’t like poetry at all, but I also don’t like it that much! Depend of the idea and the feeling, I think!
