Do you know where all the foods on your dinner plate came from? Do you think it would taste better if you did?

The local food movement is gaining popularity in the US right now. It is all about eating locally-grown fruits and vegetables, and buying meat and dairy products from locally-raised animals. People who believe in eating locally say that local foods are fresher, healthier, and better for the environment than foods that have to travel long distances to get to your plate. Hear Marni and Amy’s take on this new trend.

Marni:  Devan, I had the most amazing meal at a local restaurant. And you know what was so amazing about it?

Devan:  What’s that?

Marni:  Everything on the plate was local ingredients. That’s what they specialize in.

Devan:  Local? You mean, like, they grew them around here? Like a farm nearby?

Marni:  Yeah. Actually, outside the restaurant they have a little garden area, so a lot of the vegetables and herbs are grown there. And then all the meat they get sourced from only 30 miles away or something like that. So everything is within a 30-mile radius.

Devan:  So what’s the benefit of that? Is it more flavorful or nutritious?

Marni:  I think so. I think having homegrown ingredients you really taste a difference, because it’s picked more recently, prepared more recently…

Devan:  Was it all organic?

Marni:  Most of it was. And I just absolutely loved it. I would eat there again day after day.

Devan:  What did you order?

Marni:  I ordered an heirloom tomato salad, and it had a lot of fresh basil, and there was cheese from a goat farm that was about 20 miles away. And then I had a steak.

Devan:  That sounds pretty good. But I doubt it beats McDonald’s.

Marni:  Ah! We need to go there and you will see that eating local is the way to go.

Marni just ate a great meal at a restaurant that only serves food made with local ingredients; everything they serve, from vegetables to meat, comes from, at most, 30 miles away.

Devan wonders what the big deal is: is local food more flavorful, or nutritious? Marni thinks it is. In fact, her salad and steak tasted so good that she could imagine eating there every day. Devan’s still not sure…could local food really be better than McDonald’s?

Do you know where the food you eat is grown? Do you care? Do you think that locally-grown food is more flavorful, or better for you—or do you prefer fast food?

look, this topic is great for me. A part for running, cycling, football and so on cooking is one of my best hobbies.

When I cook I feel very relaxed.

Coming back to the lesson, I don’t agree with it. I can cook italian food, yes, it’s probably fresher and helthier but I love Mexican chili, Chinese and Japanese food, I love eating paella  and couscous. Moreover I’m moving to Indonesia and I’m very courious to find out what kind of food I’m going to eat.

In concusion I don’t matter from where comes what I eat, Just I try to get fresh ingredients or I try to go to trusted restaurant.

My favourite food is that grown in my own garden.

I just adore to pick a cucumber up, cut it in half, put a pinch of salt above and eat it up crunching with a big pleasure.:)

Of course, I care about food I consume. Unfortunately, nowadays we don’t always know either where food brought from or what it’s consist of. Nevertheless, our organisms are accustomed to everything as  people are strong creatures.

Thank God, I am still alive and in a good health.:)

WOW, after hearing Marni talking about the benefit of eating locally or healthy  and nutritious food  , Devan  brought to the table  MCDonald´s  ,which is  to my understanding  anything  but healthy  food.    Undecided

Eating locally has got some benefits:

  • the food is tastier Undecided

  • the farmers get a full retail value for the product rather than they spend on gas, transportation, labor

  • sustain local jobs

  • better for economy

  • reduce global warming

But it’s expensive! twice or more to compare to the food brought from the other warmer countries and if to chose local or not local, I’d go with the better deal.

I can’t say more ,as Moriza    said :  Baset & Joy   occupied all place here , their thoughts and their words are wonderful . just I want add that : Eating locally encourages the use of local farmland for farming, thus giving farmers an economic reason to keep development in check while preserving open space.
By eating locally grown food you will help to reduce fuel consumption and global warming, strengthen the local economy, and protect the environment. You will also be eating fresher, tastier fruits and vegetables while safeguarding the health of your family.
Ryo ....
If some countries are facing many problems do not have
such as drinking water Or fresh air .They must face their problems, they must don’t give up, they must look solutions for their problems! As Baset & Joy said; i think eating locally will solve their problems

Of course i’d like always to eat locally-grown foods, it’s more healthier and more definitely flavorful and about do i know where the foods we have come from? of course i’m sure it’s not healthier enough but one of my wishes in the future is to plant most of my foods in my garden and besides being healthier, it’s an amazing feeling to have foods you plantedSmile

I know that some of the veggies and fruit here are locally grown, but most othem are not. I think that locally grown food is  fresher, so of course it tastes better! imported food wouldn’t be as fresh as the local grown, no matter how well preserved it was while shipping. so locally grown food FTW!! :D

Ngubo Sixtus

yeah local veg and food are right because you get the fresh one.we can import only the things that we don’t have in our country.
