When you travel, whether it’s to a new country or just the forest outside your city, you see and experience all sorts of exciting new things. It’s fun to have someone there to say, “Wow, look at that!” or to remember your trip with later.

But traveling alone has it’s advantages too. With no one else to please, you can do and see exactly what you want to. You can make new friends more easily since you’ll talk to strangers to avoid loneliness.

Sara recently took a solo trip. Listen to her discuss it with Vanessa in this travel English lesson.

Vanessa:  A friend of mine just went camping this weekend, but she went all alone. It seems really weird to me. Have you ever taken a vacation by yourself?

Sara:  I have. I’ve never camped alone, but I’ve driven cross-country by myself a few times and I really liked it.

Vanessa:  Really? I think I might be a little nervous to be traveling alone, especially if I was going to a different country or something.

Sara:  Right. I think what was cool when I was driving cross-country, was I would stay with people that I knew in different places every night. So even though I was traveling alone, I wasn’t entirely by myself in a way.

Vanessa:  I see, so you had people who knew where you were and if something went terribly wrong, someone would notice.

Sara:  I just think it’s really cool to totally be in charge of your agenda and your itinerary and not have to worry about what anyone else wants to do.

Vanessa:  You can set your own pace, and sightsee, and…

Sara:  Listen to your own music, you know?

Vanessa:  That is very important! Maybe traveling alone isn’t such a bad idea. Maybe I’ll start small and take a day trip by myself!

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Vanessa was surprised to learn that when her friend went camping over the weekend, she went alone. She thinks this is weird, and asks Sara if she has ever gone on vacation by herself. Sara has never been camping on her own, but really likes driving cross-country alone. She has done it several times.

Vanessa thinks traveling alone, especially to another country, would make her nervous. Sara explains that she met with friends in different cities each night of her trip, so she wasn’t always alone. There were people who knew where she was in case something went wrong.

When you travel alone, you can be totally in charge of your itinerary. Sara points out you can listen to your choice of music, too! Vanessa agrees that that is very important. She says maybe traveling alone isn’t a bad idea, and maybe she will start off with a day trip alone.

Do you enjoy traveling alone? Is it acceptable to do where you live?

I think it is difficult to say because it depends on what you do like to do there where you go to. If I only want to relax and alleviate stress of work for example by going to the beach or go out at night, I would go with close friends or relatives. On the other hand if my goal is getting to know a new place or country such as culture, traditions or people and their way of living, I would prefer a traveling alone, because I’ll surely meet other people traveling for the same goal as mine and also people from that place, so I think it would be funny and I would best enjoy the trip…

Interesting question, in lot of countires it is considered completely weird, but i have to say afetr travelling criss-cross Usa and Canada I love it.
You can see amazing things, talk to amazing people and do it exactly your way.
I dont like to hide in the lonely corner, but travelling alone can give you a lot.

Do I like travelling alone?? It depends. If I am planning to visit some old friends during my trip, I prefer solo trip. But for camping or visiting a new city I prefer being in a group involving my close friends.

Involving others to your plan may cause problems sometimes. I was planning to participate a a “sky observation camp” and I wanted to go with one of my close friends. He wasn’t sure he could manage it because he had some exams but he asked me to wait for him. When he decide he was able to come with me, it was too late. We couldn’t find ticket.

One story.

One man hadn,t had a holiday for three years and realized he need to get away,so he booked a trip with Travelbag Advantures to Jordan. There were about 16 people in the group. He certainly wasn,t looking for a girlfriend-he just needed a break from work-but he hit off with Helen and they became friends straightaway.

Jordan was beautiful, and they had a great mix of culture, relaxition, travelling and sunshine. He came back feeling rejuvenated, and met someone fantastic ,he would never had met in the normal course of his life.

And such examples are hundreds. So,travelling alone for single may be a great luck and helpful in meeting smbd special in his/her life.

I’ve never travelled alone, but I’d love to do that in the future,(this is one of plans for my future life!).I think for traveling alone day trips are much better, because on the trips taking longer than one or two days, I get bored if I am by myself!.. especially if there’s no one who I know

However there are some times in our lives when we need to be lonley :)

I never travel alone. What’s the use of it?

If I go to the countryside in any season, mostly in summer, I have my beloved man beside me. I also adore to have a big company of my parents, my son’s family and relatives with me. It’s such a fun. You know those things in the countryside: swimming, sunbathing, riding a bike, fishing, boating, barbeque etc.

The same situation is with tarveling somewhere round Ukraine or abroad. Just a tiny difference…I need the only man, my loved one. He is enough for me to make any journey a fairytale.

i’ve experienced it befor but not exactly alone with my sister when we were single. it was fantastic, u know, bcs we had to cook , go shopping , and so on. i suggest doing that for people are tie to their mother apron. it help them to be more responsibl and stand on their feet. take it easy honey
