Three…two…one…meh. New Year’s Eve is supposed to be lots of fun. It’s the biggest party night of the year. Everyone gets dressed up and goes someplace special to count down to midnight.

The problem is, the expectations are so high for New Year’s Eve, that it’s easy to be disappointed. What if you’re stuck in traffic at midnight? That’s no way to start a new year. Or what if you didn’t get invited to any parties?

In this New Year’s Eve English lesson, Jason is excited for the holiday, but Vanessa is preparing for the worst.

Jason:  Hey it’s New Year’s Eve tonight, what are you going to do?

Vanessa:  I always get so excited for New Year’s Eve every year and it always turns out to be kind of a let down.

Jason:  How could it be a let down? It’s the biggest party night of the year!

Vanessa:  Well, I don’t know, I see all these holiday advertisements where there’s beautiful, sparkly gowns and glasses of champagne, and I just always really want to go to a glamorous party or something on New Year’s Eve. Have you ever been to anything like that?

Jason:  I guess I so. You know, it seems like whatever you do is sort of glamorous in your memory after the fact. I spent New Year’s Eve 2007 in a dive bar but for some reason, since it was New Year’s Eve, it just seems like it was a magical evening, even though I’m sure it wasn’t.

Vanessa:  Really?

Jason:  Yeah!

Vanessa:  I don’t know, I guess I always pictured myself on the arm of someone dashing in a tuxedo, in a beautiful ball gown, like New Year’s Eve in the movies. But, yet again, no glamorous ball this year.

Jason:  There’s got to be a glamorous ball somewhere! Maybe you can even have one at your house.

Vanessa:  No, I already have plans for New Year’s Eve.

Jason:  What’s that?

Vanessa:  I’m babysitting for my three-year-old niece.

Jason:  OK…well…I hope you guys ring it in in style.

There are often lots of parties happening on New Year’s Eve in the US. Jason is excited for the holiday. Vanessa, however, feels that since the night is supposed to be so fun and glamorous, it’s often a let down.

This year, Vanessa is staying home and babysitting her niece. She wishes she was going to a ball, but she doesn’t want to end up at a dive bar or something and be disappointed. Jason thinks ringing in the new year is fun no matter where you do it.

How do you celebrate New Year’s Eve?

Ukraine

Dorothee, we have a few wonderful New Year’s Eve and Christmas’s Eve  movies. They are full of sparkling humor  and are in absolute harmony with Ukrainain old and modern traditions. Every year they are shown on TV, and all Ukrainian people watch them again and again with great pleasure. I don’t think, they are adopted for watching by english speaking people. Moreover, it can be not understood by people of other nationalities. They are too ours.:)

I’ve got a question I’m just going to ask out of curiosity: I know there are an awful lot of Christmas movies as well as Halloween movies that are popular in almost every country, but do you know any traditional “New Year’s Eve” movie? Thank you for replying.

In Germany the comedy “Dinner for One” is a movie we traditionally watch on New Year’s Eve, because it’s about an elder English lady who was born on New Year’s Eve and now celebrates her 90th birthday. It’s amazing! Because of the English title and because they speak English throughout the whole movie, I used to think that this movie got produced in Great Britain or the USA. It wasn’t until one or two years ago that I found out that firstly the actors as well as the makers of this movie are German and that secondly most citizens of countries where they don’t speak German don’t even know this comedy. I’m watching this movie on youtube.com right now, while writing this.

Warning! When I said this was a very funny comedy, I meant that it was funny to me. The first few minutes may be boring, but I love the whole rest of this movie. However I also know that different cultures – and actually even just different individuals – may beg to differ.

Hello Julito, you are welcome, and happy New Year.:) Thank you for the greetings.

All my family and I are urban residents, therefore, unfortunately, we don’t dance Ukrainian falk dances at home. We dance dancings without name.:) Just do it  as we like. Anything will do.:)

Still if I’m invited to the village for some celebrations, especially to a wedding, I will do everything the villagers do, for instance, sing Ukrainian songs, I adore them, dance our folk dances and even drink samogonka ( special homemade vodka), though I don’t like any kind of vodka.:)

I respect those who invited me to spend time together.

I feel very sorry for Vanessa that instead of ringing in the new year on the arms of a dashing hubby and with a glass of champagne in her hand ,will have to babysit a child , there must be  a reason only known to her  why on this  special night she took on the responsability to act as a nanny .

New year, new hopes , new year´s resolutions  ,that at least for me, won´t last  beyond that   night  ,  cheers to you my friends . happy new year !!

Ukraine

New Year’s day is one of the favorite holidays in  Ukraine. On New Year’s eve almost all preparations are finished. Homes are decorated with fir trees  full of special balls and toys hung up on them and all around the rooms.  All presents are put under fir trees. Kids are waiting for them impatiently.:)We also love to decorate our homes with twinkling colored lamps with are placed not only on the walls but also across the windows. It looks so beautiful and cheerful from outside. All women are busy with cooking. Me too. I just found a few minutes to congratulate all of you, dear Ebabians.

At about 11 P.M. we will take our places at the holiday table and say good bye to the current year. At exactly 12 A.M. when the clock chimes  New Year 2013 , we will drink champaign and let the New Year in.  :)Than we have very delicious meal, watch TV programs, dance, sing and have a lot of fun. The  fires and sounds  of salut will be heard and seen for about 10 minutes from outside, and fiesta can go on  till morning.

At the end we will go out to play in the snow, make fireworks and laugh a lot. We greet with the New Year everyone passing by. It’s a tradition.

Next two days we will visit our relatives and go on with celebration.

I always go to the church to thank God for all bliss I have had in the passed year.

I have to go to the kitchen  as I have a lot of work to do.:)

May you have a year that is filled with love, laughter, brightness and hope. HAPPY NEW YEAR, ENGLISH, BABYS ADMIN AND ALL EBABIANS!

With love,

Irene

Algerians, like many of the world’s people, are

preparing to celebrate New Year’s Eve of 2013 with great display of fireworks

here and in other major cities. Most hotels and resorts in Algiers and other big cities are preparing to

receive visitors who would be entertained by a fine selection of performers as

well as evening shows and programs. Hotels and tourists agencies compete to bring in tourists and costumers by

offering exceptional deals and services with reasonably fair prices of USD

60-120 per night. A large number of foreign tourists prefer to go to four cities located in
