Every major metropolitan city is crowded with tourists, especially in the summer. Tourism is an important part of many cities’ economies, because tourists spend money at restaurants, hotels, and cultural attractions. Also, many people have jobs in the tourism industry.

There are some downsides to tourism, too, though. The tourist crowds can get to be too much. And sometimes tourists are rude, and they don’t try to understand the customs of a city. They act as if the people of the city should be there to serve them. Find out Mason and Marni’s take on tourists in this cities English lesson.

Mason:  I just had a friend in town, and I had to do the whole tourist, host thing. Which I like doing every once in a while, it sort of gives you a chance to go some of the places that you don’t usually go.

Marni:  True.

Mason:  But, overall, I’m glad we don’t live in a city that I think is a big tourist destination because, generally, they kind of annoy me.

Marni:  Really? I guess I’m a little ambivalent about tourists. I think there’s a real benefit to having tourists. It’s a good boost to the economy. And I always chuckle when I see people doing the traditional pose with the digital camera in front of certain very scenic sights around town. You usually can kind of tell who they are.

Mason:  Sure. It’s all about the volume, right? If you go to New York, or you go to London, or Paris, any of the really huge cities-

Marni:  Major cities.

Mason:  It’s like nobody lives there. It’s just people standing around taking pictures or giant tour buses.

Marni:  I don’t know. Any major city is going to have that. I like to travel, but I don’t like to think of myself as a tourist, but I’m sure other people look at me as a tourist. I don’t want to be too judgmental.

Mason:  I have been guilty of stopping in the middle of a busy street because I don’t know where I’m going, to look at a map, and someone bumps into me.

Marni:  Sure, but that’s part of the experience, right? When you’re somewhere you don’t know.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Mason recently hosted a friend from out of town. He took the friend around his city, and, in a way, that made him feel as if he was a tourist in his own home. He’s glad that his city does not generally see a lot of tourists. It bothers him when he goes to a larger city and sees tourists everywhere.

Marni is more ambivalent about tourists. She feels more than one way about them. She really sees the economic benefits to tourism, even if she sometimes thinks their actions are a little silly. Most of all, she knows that sometimes she is a tourist, too, so can she really complain?

How do you feel about tourists? Do many tourists come to your city or town? When you travel, do you think you act like a typical tourist?

Morizia,

first of all ı want to thank you ,for sincere answers and ı respect your opinions too much ,but it doesnt show that I agree with you ..

I accept dreams are free travelling way but you cant see new place in dreams..you cant walk in the unknown streets, you cant sit in an unknown cafe ..for seeing them in dreams ,they must be recorded before ..

other new topic we cant agree is TV..in today ,there are very less people watch tv..internet,PC replaced tv’s place..only left important news, popular serials and movies on Tv screen..Internet bacame more popular than TV.. also, kids search answers of riddles on net .

its nice to hear different and respectful comments here..

by the way,are you an active or passive tourist when you travel somewhere ??

Soul_Mate,it can be strange for you, though it’s the only way of travel for many people.Far not everyone can afford to visit  popular sights of his/her country, not speaking about others. For them, it’ s possible only in dreams (tv is a good helper in such a case too).

People like to dream, why can’t they travel in them?

As for a passive tourists,it’s when they have only rest (walk and look evrth around,or lie in the sun…)

The world is so interesting…there are many countries and each one is very unique with its sightseeing, landscapes and a way of life.

These days there are many different kinds of travellers who plan their trips for their unique reasons.Ones travellers base their trips around outdoor activities such as hiking, boating, snowboarding…other tourists look for places where they can see and learn more. They choose destinations mainly for sightseeing, the arts, entertainment, nightlife…Travelling families often choose places where both children and parents can have fun.

Thus, tourists can be active, passive, excursion and family ones.

But,there is one more type of travellers which of can be everyone of us – it’s imaginary tourists; we can close our eyes, relax, and start visit any country or place which we wish in visualization.at least,it’s free and doesn’t require much time.lol

it is nice to be a tourist in the streets of an unknown place, town, city, with map and camera..to see historical and natural beauties ..to feel its different ambiance..different sounds and colors ..different people and languages..different religion and its magnificent buildings..different food and drinks..

travelling is old as human being history and all people like it ..there is a hidden traveller  ”Marco Polo” inside of all people ..to discover different world in the same world is a magnificent feeling and experience ..

honestly, some countries and cities are luckier than others for attracting tourists..they have amazing places for seeing..like Paris,Roma,Budapest,Prauge,Saint Petersburg,Moscow,London,New York,Tokyo,Beijing,Istanbul,Athena..these cities have metropolitian advantages too..you can see alot of places there..

on the other hand, there are very beautiful places for seeing in the world except big cities..great wall, pyramits,Machu Picchu,Cappodokia,Pisa,..wonderful waterfalls, beaches, religion buildings,mountains,lakes,rivers,castles..

We need only,time and money

Having tours every once in a while is a healthy habit :D
Because it refreshes our minds ..
Even though tourism could be useful for both tourists and the visited place, I think it has some downsides.I believe that in some places tourism could have more negative impact than the positive one. So, I think it depends on the place itself to decide if the tourism is good or not.

I am kind of ambivalent about this tourism thing too. Tourism can boost a country economy allowing small local retailers to do business or sell local made products to tourists. In the same way huge tourism industries especially in developing countries have negative impacts on the social and environmental areas. Many of negative impacts of tourism occure when the amount of visitors is beyond the environment ability to cope with the visitor volume. Unchecked tourism development may lead to pollution, prostitution and the lost of biodiversity. It even costs more for countries to solve out social and environment damages caused by uncontrolled tourisms.

For my country, Indonesia, tourism plays a key role in its economic growth. This sector is as a significant source of its foreign exchange revenues. With a vast archipelago of more than 17,ooo islands, the second longest shoreline in the world, 300 different ethnic groups and 250 distinct languages, and tropical climate throughout the year, natural beauty, for ex Bali, and culture are two major components of Indonesian tourism.

In my hometown, actually we have some attractive tourism objects. But among them, there is only one that literally can attrcact both domestic and foreign tourists, mostly from Germany, to visit. It is a white sandy beach named Tanjung Karang. If you enjoy sunbathing, swimming, snorkling and diving, I recommend this beach as a perfect destination. To reach this stunning beach, it only takes less than 10 minutes drive from the place I live.

Personally, I see tourists as guests should be treated with respect. Generally, they are people having intent to get wonderful time in places which they are visiting. Their expenditure of visit, obviously can give positive impact on economy as I told before. Only a small number of them who are really annoying. So, be steady. If they go too far, they will face certain consequences.

Tourists? Welcome to my country!:))

My home city is not a kinda of tourist city, at least I don’t think so. When I travel, I love visiting all the places. I think I act like a tourist. But I am a very humble person and I do respect the places for anywhere I go.

The major attraction in Iran consists of the major cities like Tehran, Shiraz, Tabriz, Mashad, Yazd and many other places. Esfahan has been stamped as an UNESCO Heritage Site and stands as a major attraction in Iran. The castles, palaces, museums have always stood as important attractions in Ira to the tourists. The places in Iran with natural attractions are the national parks, ski areas, waterfalls, lakes etc. The Margoon Waterfall and the Shalmash waterfalls has attracted tourists touring in Iran. The ski areas like the Dizin, Shemshak and Alvares has attracted people interested in skiing.andSO because of these interesting places in IRAN  we have lots of tourist

I agree with Marni’s opinion. Tourists can be very important for the economy of a city. I’m from a very small city in Germany so not many tourists come to visit our city. So I usually only see tourists when I’m going to another city our country where I’m a tourist myself. I’m not sure if I act like a typical tourist. Of course I take some pictures but I try to respect the costums of the country. Anyway, I often go to typical tourist cities where are many hotels and souvenir shops.

Not only am I a regular tourist of American but I am a tourist of my own town as well. Basically everyone call me travelling person. One thing I can do without when I was travelling is taking pics in scenic spot. They remind me of good times I’ve had there. I think I am not a too much tourist myself in the aspect of keeping environment clean and maintain the scenic sights intact. As I know, some tourists have trouble keeping their hands clean. They like to tamper with scenic sights by curving their names on the memorial buildings or sculptures. Those things happened a lot on the news and are quite annoying to local people. Those people are the bad examples for the good intent tourists.

I’ve just got back from Manhattan. Well, what I can tell, you should visit that super busy metrapolitan city. If you have seen the movie once upon a time in America – it’s just exactly the same feeling and you’re in the middle of the movie. The almost century skyscrapers, people wearing suits, hurrying up their way along Wall Street. It’s a very different atmosphere from the one of your calmed down and relaxing life. It’s just amazing to feel that difference, investigate something new, get picked up by the crowd on the Fifth Avenue and get carried away along the streets and then all of a sudden to get landed catching your breath in Central Park and get some time for relaxation in that oasis. That’s what i like about traveling. Not only monuments, buildings that says a lot but people as well and when you kinda get the answers to your questions of history, it’s a great great value and happiness of traveling.
