If you love exercise, you probably love riding your bike. It’s the perfect way to travel and work out at the same time.

Riding in a city can be scary sometimes. You definitely have to pay attention to the rules of the road and, for safety, wear a helmet. When there are bike lanes, it’s easier to know where you should ride. You don’t want to fight for a spot with a car when you’re on a bike!

Some people ride bicycles just for fun. Other people use them for everyday transportation. Either way, bicycling saves money and reduces your carbon footprint.

Find out who loves to bike in this English lesson.

Marni:  Man, I’m so out of breath. I just biked five miles to get here.

Amanda:  You rode your bicycle over here again?

Marni:  Oh my gosh, it’s awesome! I love getting exercise while I get from Point A to Point B.

Amanda:  I know, but it’s so complicated. The rules of the road are different.

Marni:  Well, yeah, but they’re not that different. You ride with traffic and you obey the traffic rules. It’s pretty easy.

Amanda:  You know how it rains here all the time.

Marni:  I know.

Amanda:  So you have to wear that gear. Pants, hat, coat…

Marni:  It’s nice to have good rain gear. It definitely helps. But I think it’s manageable. The great thing about living in a city that supports biking is there are bike lanes, so there are designated spots for bikers and for cars. If everyone is courteous and obeys the rules of the road, we’ll all get there safely.

Amanda:  Come rain or shine, huh?

Marni:  Absolutely. I am dedicated to this. I feel so good. I’m getting so much exercise, I’m not spending money on gas, I’m reducing my carbon footprint. I feel like it’s a win-win-win!

Amanda:  I just am anti-bicyclists, and I feel like they have no sanity at all.

Marni:  Well, that’s not fair. I mean, you could say the same thing about drivers. So I think that we need to make an effort as bicyclists and motorists to all get along.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Marni arrives to a meeting with Amanda, and she can barely breathe. She biked five miles, and she definitely got her exercise!

Amanda seems a little bit annoyed with Marni. She talks about all the reasons why biking is hard work, such as following traffic rules and wearing rain gear.

Marni doesn’t change her mind, though. For her, it’s easy to know the rules of the road. Because her city has lots of bike lanes, she doesn’t have to worry about where to ride, either. She likes saving money, getting exercise, and helping the environment.

Unfortunately, Amanda doesn’t agree. She doesn’t like bicyclists at all. She and Marni will have to agree to disagree.

What’s your opinion about bicycling? Have you ever disagreed with your friends?

Hi,

Bicycling is not safe here in the city where I live.  There are not bike lanes.  There are some cities with good bike lanes though.

I have disagreed with some friends of course, it’s important to have you own opinion.  You just have to learn to express your ideas in a polite way.

Have a nice day :D

As it is  in most modern cities  where  roads are packed with buses and cars and commuting back and forth everyday eventually  turns out  getting on your nerves,  the use of a bike it  is more and more  a necessity . Take the example of Holland , even executives use a bike to go to work . i have seen pictures that in China bikes are widely in use. In my city the mayor is implementing  bike lanes .  As i am not used to see many bikers on the road , i will have to be careful not  to be run over  by a cyclist, although so far very few people are making use of the new bike lanes.

Hi everyone here !

one of the big  problem on bycycling here in the cities and/or in the small towns in the South Italy is that there are often not bike lanes ( or few of those …) and it is so dangerous to ride, of course. When I stay  in the countryside , I like to use my bike,so not dangerous there.

Riding a bicycle isn’t in vogue in Tehran, the city where I live and in fact It is an activity which predominately is done by children and it’s so rare to see an adult is riding on a bicycle on the streets and It’s so bad, (Probably because of that Tehran is one of the most air polluted city in the world).

And talking about myself, in my childhood I had an bicycle and I rode a lot in summertime and it was a great experience to ride it on hot summer evenings and feel the breeze on my face.

But now as an adult I’m not into it anymore, I prefer to pick out the fastest and safest way to commute and travel.

It can be better if everyone obey the rule ,sometime ,Pedestrain taken the bike lane which is dangerous. In our city you also need to pay attention for wild dogs and cats ,they always use bike lanes.

I like riding bicycle. But I seldomly use it. Instead I use bike,to reach my office. The reason behind it composed of two facts.. Basically , In my city or place, people regard you as ‘someone from economically weak background ’ and second most important fact is that , riding a bicycle in a crowded city that contains various high speed vehicles is not suitable from safety point of view. While riding bicycle in such scenerio ,one may be overcautions of not striking any high speed vehicle instead of enjoying it.

I used it upto my college life , thereafter I gave it up. I WISH THERE MUST BE ONE DAY IN A ATLEAT ONE FORTNIGHT WHERE ALL SHOULD BE MADE MANDATORY TO USE BICYCLE.

But we need to be safe when riding a bike. The rules of the road are different. In my town, some ppl even drive their cars or motorbikes on the Bike lanes….=.=!

To be honest, I seldom work out. Though I want to form a good habit to do exercise regularly, I am too lazy to do so.

I have some friends, expecially foreign friends who like bicycling very much. Those people are always riding their bike to work and get back home, they seldom take taxis or buses, in their mind, bicycling not only gurantees them a good health, but also help to reduce their carbon footprint.

I hope I could get rid of my laziness and choose a way of exercise to persist in order to keep health.
