Hunting has been an activity for as long as there have been people and animals. For thousands of years, humans have hunted animals for food, but today people also hunt for sport. An animal that is killed might not be eaten, but instead its skin or head might be hung on a wall. Today’s hunting is not always about being self-sufficient like it was so many years ago.

People who are opposed to hunting often don’t like guns, killing animals, or both. People who are avid hunters believe that having a gun is their right, and so is killing animals, especially if it’s done as humanely as possible. If it came down to having a meal or being hungry, would everyone shoot an animal? Maybe, or maybe not!

Marni and Brian discuss a difficult topic in today’s English lesson about a popular outdoor activity.

Marni:  I just was spending time with my friend, and he is an avid hunter. What are your thoughts?

Brian:  Oh, hunting? I wish I had that skill, but I am not good around dead animals. I feel like I would be totally unprepared in the apocalypse if it came down to killing an animal.

Marni:  He grew up hunting with his family. They lived off the land, they were totally self-sufficient. So he grew up doing it. I’m just so opposed to it. I mean, killing animals for sport? I guess a lot of people do that. He used it as a food source.

Brian:  I can imagine using it as a food source. But I can’t even think about touching a carcass or trying to skin it. I don’t even know how to fire a gun, let alone how to load ammunition or anything like that.

Marni:  I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I am totally for gun control. A lot of hunters I know actually are.

Brian:  It seems unnecessary in this day and age.

Marni:  I agree.

Marni was just hanging out with a friend who likes to go hunting. She understands why he does it, but she doesn’t agree with the activity. To Marni, killing animals for sport isn’t OK. Even though her friend hunts for food and not for sport, it still makes her uncomfortable.

Brian’s thoughts on hunting are more about what he can and cannot do with a gun, and less about if hunting is an OK activity. Brian knows that if he needed to kill and eat an animal, using a gun would be a problem. He doesn’t know how to shoot a gun, and he also doesn’t know what to do with the animal after it’s dead.

Marni and Brian both have little experience with hunting… Marni because she believes it’s wrong, and Brian because he has never tried it.

Have you ever gone hunting? Is it OK to kill animals for sport, or only for food?

In very primitive tribes, especially nomadic ones, hunting was one of the vital rules of survival, so talking about food, its necessary to know how to hunt when you are in need when your stomach starts rumbling, even though you disagree with it generally. In some cases, hunting could help the balance of ecosystem, otherwise as a fun or hobby it can destroy the order of nature or endanger some special species.

Im biologist, for me hunting for hobby is forbidden. It makes scarcity of many species, moreover they have the right to live and breed. Either for large scale commercial without considering environment.

Hunting for hobby is so brutal, specially those that are known as endangered species. By hunting, particularly excessive hunting, the whole ecosystem would be ruined and even human beings would be in danger.

Hunting animals just for sport is undoubtely unacceptable and horrible act especially by people who are part of modern life. Why don’t we care about mother nature? Why don’t we give a damn about all those innocent animals and kill them brutally? How do we call ourselves human? In this day and age that everybody can find different kinds of activities to entertain themselves, so many sports to enjoy, why do they go hunting as a hobby? As Brian said if it comes down to killing animal in order to survive in apocalypse is so hard let alone killing them for sport.

Governments must set strict rules to tackle this issue, but unfortunately they don’t care about this issue as much as they must. I wish those hunters would be punished because of their crimes, however, it is not yet considered as a crime.

Aryel, I totally agree with you. Humans are disgusting creatures. They just demolish everything, nature, animals, environment. :(

I think it’s not Ok at all. There are some professional hunters whose job is killing animal ,if there are too many of them in a forest for example. Although I don’t really agree with it. I am not an expert, but I think the nature can do it with it’s own lows. But killing just for hobby is not accaptable at all, not even when they “just”kill a little bird. Of course there are some cases when people want to protect their own, for example their fruits, or other product from hungry animals, but I guess there are many  other way for it which is humanely.

And I am sure that people who can kill animal just for fun they can’t care about people too.

Certainly there are some countries where people hunter animal for living. They do it in this day and age too, because it is material needs for them not a hobby or fun.But I guess they respect animals and their nature very much.

My last thought is that people should respect more their nature.

When I was a Kid, I saw some of our villages use a Hunting Gun to kill birds for food. I was too afraid to hear the sounds of the gun at that time. It was very popular though…

But I havn’t ever tried. :))

@AryelLanes  I can’t agree with you more. :D

Killing for “sport”?! Bullshit! Come on!!! Just because they’re not humans, it doesn’t mean that they don’t feel pain, have feelings and babies to take care of! Human or not, it’s a life!

Animals kill other animals because they have to survive. That’s TOTALLY different. These kind of people do it just for the sake of having fun and something to hang on their walls. Why don’t they just go for a REAL sport? Why don’t they buy a beautiful canvas to hang on their walls instead? Why don’t they spend the money that they use to buy guns on their kids? Damn, it drives me nuts!

The way they spend their money is not OUR problem as long as they don’t mess with Mother Nature… :@

I’d like to rip their heads off and hang them on MY wall… I’d laugh every time I looked at their evil good for nothing faces!

Humans ARE disgusting creatures… Indeed…
