Imagine if you could meet your favorite celebrity… the singers whose CDs are piled on your shelf, the sports star whose posters are all over your wall, the author whose books you’ve read a million times. You have the chance to meet in person. You walk up to him or her, and then?

Would you be brave enough to say, “Hi”? Or would you be so shy that you would simply smile and walk away? Chances are, you’d want to do everything you could to get the celebrity to sign something for you. A piece of paper, a napkin, maybe even your shoe! The truth is, fans love to say that they rubbed elbows with famous people. Stories are good, but having an autograph makes your tale even more worthwhile.

Find out what celebrity Rafael had the chance to meet in today’s English lesson about fame.

Jessica

Rafael:  Jessica, can I vent to you about something?

Jessica:  Sure, Rafael.

Rafael:  So I was at a corporate party, and LeBron James was there, making an appearance.

Jessica:  Oh my gosh.

Rafael:  And I was really thrilled about that, but I was just too shy to ask for his autograph. I wasn’t sure if it was actually a worthwhile thing. I don’t know. What would you have done?

Jessica:  Oh, I would have asked for his autograph. I can’t believe you didn’t. I would have rubbed elbows with him. That could be valuable. That’s worth something. You could get that framed, too.

Rafael:  I was thinking maybe it could be something I could share with other people, but he’s a celebrity, and who am I? I don’t know. I was just feeling a little bit shy.

Jessica:  You should have asked. I bet he loves the fame. He would have given you an autograph.

Rafael:  Well, if he had, it would be framed right now on my wall. If I were famous, I don’t know how I’d feel if this weird guy who I’d never met before just came up to me and asked me to write my name on his shirt.

Jessica:  Yeah, I don’t know if I would be comfortable signing somebody’s body, but I would sign a playbill or a poster.

Rafael:  How cool would it be if he signed my forehead?

Jessica:  That would actually be cool. As long as you took a picture of it.

Rafael tells Jessica about seeing LeBron James at a corporate party. He is impressed by the basketball star and wanted to get his autograph. However, Rafael did not ask for James’ autograph because he was too shy to talk to the celebrity.

Jessica says that she definitely would have asked for the autograph. After all, LeBron James is famous, and she thinks he probably likes the attention from fans.

Rafael thinks it would be weird if he were famous and people asked him to sign their clothes. Jessica agrees that signing clothes or parts of a person’s body would be strange, but she thinks signing a poster or a playbill would be totally normal.

Have you ever asked a celebrity for an autograph? Who was it? Whose autograph would you like to have?

An autograph? Come on! What would I ever do with a mere autograph? Brag about it with my friends? Yeah, right! That’s a waste of time… Seriously! I can’t get over how people get so excited about a signature on a piece of paper. This is not even a picture! Err
I pass it!
