When the temperature starts going up, you might go crazy trying to stay cool. Turning on a fan might help for awhile. However, when it really gets hot, the only way to monitor the temperature is with air conditioning.

Although running an AC isn’t as efficient as using a fan, it’s much more comfortable. With a push of a button, your house feels as cool as you want it. It’s the perfect climate, no matter how hot it is outside.

Why doesn’t Gary want to turn on his AC? Find out in today’s English lesson about being frugal.

Gary

Jessica:  So, Gary.

Gary:  Yeah.

Jessica:  I just flew back home from Las Vegas.

Gary:  It is hot in Las Vegas.

Jessica:  It was 110 degrees. It was so warm.

Gary:  It was a dry heat, right?

Jessica:  Yes, it was. But everywhere we went, they had air conditioning. And it was so comfortable.

Gary:  This nice climate everywhere. Down in the casinos, up in the room. Everywhere, right?

Jessica:  Absolutely. And I am happy to pay for air conditioning when I live in a very hot climate.

Gary:  In my normal day to day life, I don’t use air conditioning.

Jessica:  Really?

Gary:  Yeah. I like to save energy. I would rather have a ceiling fan because it’s a bit more efficient

Jessica:  Yeah.

Gary:  …than having an AC running all the time. I’m a little frugal, watching the pennies, trying to not spend money where I don’t need to.

Jessica:  Oh, that’s a good idea. I’m very frugal, too. But I do like an air conditioner over a fan because I feel like it’s easier to monitor the temperature.

Gary:  That’s true. If you’re comfortable using an air conditioner at your place, that’s great. If I need it because the temperatures are just so, so hot, do you mind if I come over?

Jessica:  Not at all. You are more than welcome to come over anytime.

Jessica is telling Gary about a trip she just took to Las Vegas. It was very hot there, but she stayed cool because there was air conditioning everywhere.

Gary agrees that AC can create a comfortable environment, but he doesn’t actually use it in his normal life. He prefers to use a fan because it saves him money.

Jessica says she tries to watch how much money she spends, too, but for her, using the air conditioning is worth it. It’s easier for her to control the temperature, and she doesn’t have to worry about being too hot.

It doesn’t sound like Gary will change his mind, but he asks Jessica if he can come enjoy her cool house if his fan doesn’t work well enough. Of course, Jessica agrees. That’s what friends are for.

Do you use AC or a fan? How hot are the temperatures where you live?

Ok, AC is well but we must use and make some tools which are important for environment and for all the people use it with not expensive energy and one of the most important problem as my freinds pointed that its not harm our heath and The Earth functions,

Yes. I do use AC when I live in a very hot climate or when driving a car in summer and winter.

But sometime I can feel some kind of guilty. Because I heard that the Freon, which is widely used for air conditioning , can destroy the ozone layer which prevent our earth from exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays which can harm our health.  The same time, it can be causing the greenhouse effect that has made the temperature of the earth keep rising. Now I can clearly feel the overall climate getting hotter year by year.

It is a vicious cycle created by humans.

  But what can be done.

Before I left for Miami people kept telling me ” It’s going to be hot and you’ll suffer from excessive humidity in August”
I shrugged it off because I knew I’d be in an airconditioned building most of the day.
Now that I am here, I can say I have never experienced a heat like there is currently in Miami.
The scorching sun overwhelms me. I could not exist here without AC. Restaurants even have fans that blow out mist at outdoor seating areas to make people cope with the heat.
Nevertheless, I did roast myself a little on the beach today and sure will do it again tomorrow :)

Yesterday we had no choice as to turn on the AC as it was unbearable to take that hot weather anymore. It all came with it – headaches, drowsiness leading to restless disfunctional being. But as soon as the cold air started fuming around, giving us a new lease of life, we shook the sleepiness off and got back to normal being. Today is breezy and cool and you there’s hardly any trace of scorching hot, muggy weather is left. You feel alert, to the point and full of energy. But for someone it’s cold. So it’s individual.

it’s very hot in summer of my city. AC is quite necessary, because fan is useless for monitoring the temperature. i am a frugal person, too. But i think my health is more important.

The weather here is cold.  Somedays we even need a heater.

I agree with some people here about using AC, because you have to take care more of your health.

I think the only place where I like hot weather is on the beach :D

It’s really hot these days.
That’s why I often eat shaved ice called “kakigoori” in Japanese.
But sometimes I get stomachache.
Oh no…

Wow, u all have interesting ideas.

Evey one watches their pennies in their own ways and try to spend it as much economically as possible, but i think we work to make life easier so what’s the point of having money and not to spend it on our comfort. U know it’s summer and temperature is rising up little by little in some places, ceiling fan moves existing air around the room, and what’s more makes it hotter as time moves on.

Having air condition makes life just that little bit better.

We use fans here commonly. It’s not usually getting so hot to use AC, so mostly ceiling fans do good.. And I don’t see them this bad, they are really efficient. Besides, they are eco-friendly and don’t use so much energy.
